I have had my fed aid loans suspended with no appeal. I usually get good grades, however because my Grandson drowned this last yr., I had to drop one of my classes. I was then put on student loan suspension. This fall I appealed that suspension and won. I had to sign a piece of paper stating that I could not withdraw or get an incomplete or a f in any classes or I would be on loan suspension without any appeals. I was incorrectly advised to take on 16 credits for fall. I am in the para legal program. I couldn't keep up with an online computer class and therefore, got a F for a grade. I got B is all my other classes. I talked with the online teacher, telling her I couldn't keep up. Knowing I couldn't keep up and not being able to withdrawl or take an incomplete, made my stress even worse. I am now on loan suspension with no appeal. Ugggh. I needed that extra money to live on. Is there any way to deal with this death sentence. My tuition and books are paid for by Pell. But, now I have no extra money to live with. I am on SSI and have a very limited income. Any information you can give me will be helpful.

Are you sure only loan eligibility is suspended? I have never heard of that. Please make sure you will still be getting Pell (in order to avoid an unwelcome surprise).

You can apply for a private education loan. That’s really your only option until you make SAP.

Apparently my pell is still accessible. My state needs grant is appealable. But, it has a waiting list. Only my fed student loan is suspended and non appealable. It is kind of hard to understand how they do things.

The fact that you still have Pell but not loans is weird … if you would like to PM me & let me know the school, I will look at their SAP policy on their website. I am a financial aid officer in real life. I am not aware of the ability to stop loans but keep Pell. Now, the regs state that you are eligible to receive Pell for the term in which you regain eligibility & to receive loans for the entire period of enrollment once you regain eligibility … but this refers to the point at which you actually regain eligibility. If you lost eligibility for the spring term, you would lose all aid for that term to my knowledge. I will try to help you figure things out, if you’d like.

I see it … the policy states that “you must complete & pass a minimum of 6 credits to remain eligible for the Stafford loan.” Did you not do that?

I was on already on probation from last yr. when my Grandson died. I couldn’t complete all my classes. Prolly, didn’t complete 6 credits at that time. I appealed that probation when I came back this fall. They approved my appeal with the note I signed saying I couldn’t get any F’s or I or W. Well, I should have realized I was in over my head with 16 credits. I was following my advisors schedule for me. That is the last time I will do that. So, my stafford (state needs grant) and my fed. student loan are in suspension again. I can appeal my Stafford, subject to funds. No appeal on the fed stud. loan.

It sounds like you’ll have to apply for a private loan this semester. Once you get back on good footing for SAP, you will be able to borrow Stafford loans again.

I am sorry about your grandson. Did you try to appeal again? I know that they said you can’t … but I would try if I were you. Write a personal statement with all the details & include a copy of the death certificate. It can’t hurt.

In looking over my papers, I’ll try to be more specific. I have a pell. No problem with that. My state needs grant is appealable. My direct loan from the gov. is now unappealable. It is confusing

SAP is satisfactory academic progress. If you don’t make SAP, you lose aid until you you regain SAP.

It seems like your school limits access to loans in order to keep its default rate low. You may well not have an option for appeal … I am sorry. It does look like your school reviews SAP every semester, though. If that is the case, if you do well this semester you will probably regain loan eligibility for next semester.

Since you are on SSI, I really have no way of knowing if you would be deemed eligible for a private student loan or not.

I know that times are tough for those on SSI because of how there is not going to be a cost of living increase and that some things pertaining to Medicare are going to go up.

Make double sure that you are in the clear with everything else asides from your student loans. Make double sure of the Pell and all of that covering your business, eh?

If you truly need a student loan to pay for your living expenses, then I cannot help but wonder something. What I wonder about is if there are tax credit properties exclusively for senior citizens in your area. The HUD web site would have more information about that. Where I live, those are super nice places and they are basically apartment complexes for seniors on SSI and all. No big deal, there.

You can totally appeal anything asides from your loan if you wind up having to. I am sorry, but you do have a very good reason for having earned poor marks for a spell. No one in the right mind would hate on you at all as near as I can tell.
