Federal Aid Suspension

So I was taking an accounting class this summer and I had received a pell grant for the summer. I had failed the first two tests and the professor told the class if anyone has below a 68% average on the tests to withdrawal. The last day to withdrawal without academic penalty was today. I withdrew today and the FA office told me I would have to pay back the grant and that in the Fall I would be put on suspension for Aid. I filled out a SAP-Petition for Reinstatement for aid. It required 'extenuating circumstances'. I explained my great academic transcript and I knew I could do better etc. I cannot afford to be a fulltime student without my financial aid.. Do u think they will approve my reinstatement based on the fact that I was going to fail, etc? I dont know if thats a good enough reason Im really nervous and all I can think about. Please help.

This doesn’t really make sense to me - first, summer Pell requires a minimum of six credits be taken. Are you taking another class? Is there another summer session you can register for? If you don’t take the required minimum for summer Pell, you will have to repay the summer grant but why would it put you on FA suspension if you’ve got a “great academic transcript”? Normally, you must successfully complete a certain amount of the credits you attempt, but it’s not 100%! Is there more to this story? Was this a written notification from FA? Did you file a written appeal or was this a verbal explanation you gave to someone working in FA?

My advice is to carefully read their student handbook/website to make sure you understand what conditions are attached to receiving your aid. Find out what their SAP standards are - if this is the first time you’ve withdrawn/failed a class it’s possible that they were warning you. Find out if you can take another class this summer to restore both the summer class and avoid the fall dilemma…and then ace it!

From what I’ve heard from my D, who’s taking 3 online classes this summer, more than half the class doesn’t bother to do the work, post questions, etc. and the profs are not happy about it. They’re setting themselves up for certain failure and it’s a mystery why they would pay all that money and not take it seriously. Not saying this is you, but summer classes are often harder, not easier, than full semester courses. Make sure you work harder and get help as soon as you realize you’re not “getting it”!

I was registered for financial accounting in summer A and managerial accounting in summer B. Summer B is still open to drop so I just dropped it, that doesnt effect anything. I asked them if I registered for another class in summer B will that help because I can do that, I have no problem with that and they said no it didn’t matter. I wrote a reinstatement but I have not heard back yet, I just dont understand. I have above a 3.4 GPA and have never withdrawn except for ‘extenuating cirumstances’ when my grandmother passed away, but they approved my reinstatement and nothing was done except for me paying back the money and I was not aloud to drop classes the next semester which I didn’t and made deans list that semester.

Ask them what their standard is for SAP and what your percentage of successfully completed credits vs. credits attempted is. Then you’ll know how many classes you have to take to be reinstated for FA.

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) for Financial Aid Recipients

Federal regulations require students to demonstrate satisfactory progress toward a degree or certificate in order to receive financial assistance. To be making satisfactory progress, you must:
1. Complete a minimum of 70% of credits attempted each term
2. Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA as follows:
a. Cumulative GPA of 1.80 for undergraduates who have earned 0-29 credits
b. Cumulative GPA of 2.0 for undergraduates who have earned 30 or more credits
c. Cumulative GPA of 3.0 for graduate students
3. Complete your program of study in less than 150% of the published program length

Students who fail to meet SAP standards will be placed on financial aid probation or suspension. Any student who withdraws completely, or receives all F’s, W’s or I’s will automatically be suspended from aid, regardless of the reason for not completing the hours. If there are extenuating circumstances, students may petition for reinstatement. Please refer to the Financial Aid web site for more information regarding SAP.

—So does that mean that summer in 1 term, and if I take classes in summer B and pass them I will be off?

From what you’re describing, this is the provision that’s tripping you up. Afaik, schools consider summer to be a single academic term, regardless of how many sessions are offered. So, if you took 2 classes in summer B and passed them, I would think that you’d meet the standard. I don’t know if they’d reinstate your summer aid or not, but it’s worth pursuing. If you can, have a sit down meeting with your advisor or with a senior FA person and make a plan based on their input.

Btw, I wouldn’t make take 2 accounting classes in the same summer term - do you have any electives or gen-eds like psych, history, or language or perhaps an intro to business law/marketing you can take?

I met with my advisor yesterday and he said that I have no electives that I need to take and if I take the two classes I was going to take in fall in the summer than I would not be full time in the summer because all the others classes I need require accounting. So he told me that unless I want to pick up a minor, I will not be taking any classes this summer. I’m just really worried about the aid. If it is known that I will get my aid back for the summer, I will be more than willing to just take 2 whatever classes just to pass and get my aid back.

Is financial accounting a pre-req for managerial or can you re-register for managerial for this summer? Have you taken the other intro classes for your major (sounds like you’re a business or accounting major) like stats, business law, comp sci, etc? Are any of them offered in the summer session? Did he have any useful suggestions as to how you can get off suspension by fall semester?

Yes financial accounting is a pre req for managerial. I asked my advisor the same questions and he said the classes that I ‘could’ take in summer, would make me ‘part time’ in the fall and again in the spring because so many of the major classes require accounting as a pre req for those classes. He had no advice on anything. I have written three people at the financial aid office, and I just saw that 1 of them read it tonight. So hopefully I will have an answer tomorrow.

Aren’t there any other classes that interest you, outside of the required ones? Afaik, you’re not limited to only taking the classes that are necessary for your degree. Is there some reason you can’t be part time in the fall semester? Your other choice, if they don’t approve your appeal, is to be full time with no aid at all - can you afford to do that? Even if you had to pay for the summer classes in order to get your aid restored it seems like you would be better off since you’d receive part-time grants for fall (and possibly summer).

I have always been a fulltime student. I have done all my electives and stuff and I wouldn’t want to waste money on classes I do not need, nor waste my time. I also do not want to be part time in these semesters because I do not want to be in college forever! I can afford no aid, I just do not want it to have to come down to that! I had written the financial aid office and she has written me back with no answers I had asked. Pretty annoying.
I’ll let you know when I find out. I am going to actually write the office again and see if I do take summer B classes and pass them will that take me off of this suspension for the fall. Thanks for your help.
