Federal Loans

My FA package doesn't include federal subsidized/unsubsidized loans. Could I still apply for those or do I have to take out regular loans?

Most likely, you won’t be eligible for subsidized loans - if you were, they should be included in your package. You will be eligible for unsubsidized loans unless your aid completely covers your cost of attendance (COA). Here is how to determine your eligibility:

Subsidized … COA - Expected Family Contribution (EFC, from FAFSA) - grants - scholarships - work study - Perkins loans (if any) = Need for sub loan

Unsubsidized … COA - grants - scholarships - work study - Perkins loans - subsidized loans = Need for unsub loan

You can borrow up to $5500 as a freshman (of which up to 3500 may be subsidized, depending on need). If you think you are eligible to borrow, talk to your school.

In no case are you eligible to borrow in excess of COA. That is, all aid is capped at COA - the school cannot certify any educational loans (even private) that exceed COA (when you add up all aid).
