@snowboardchick97 If you are Asian, you will have a more difficult time getting admitted to W&L than if you are White based upon the admission data. If you get admitted to W&L, you will be treated fairly for the Johnson Scholarship that too is supported by the data. Johnson Scholarship is decided by a different committee than the Admission Committee.
Asians do get accepted to W&L but those that do gain entry to W&L have academic achievement on the level of Johnson Scholars. Nearly 10% of Johnson Scholars are Asian. This is an amazing stat since the school only has about 3-4% Asians in its student body.
Coppijr and others–
Don’t feed the troll. This is a nice thread and it would be a shame for it to be hijacked.
@bellybones thank you. I read some of their disputes on other threads, and I was afraid it’d escalate on my thread too…
Also, for their interviews with alumni, what were your sons’ attire? Casual? Semi-formal? I reread the interviewing section on W&L’s website about ten times and can’t find anything about the theme of the interview. I’m preparing for semi-formal, according to other information on W&L’s regular formal dress code on campus, and have an interview outfit planned out. But I don’t want to appear overbearingly stiff or overly casual either because I’m serious about wanting to attend the school.
@snowboardchick97 I just had my W&L alumni interview recently. It was generally casual but “casual” is a subjective term. (I am a female) I wore a nice sweater with dark denim jeans and black leather boots. He had a fleece pullover and jeans. It depends on the alumni interviewing you, but I would stay safe and go with semi-formal. It’s better to be overdressed than underdressed. Not surprisingly, they judge you by what you’re wearing.
Dark jeans (if you want to go more formal, go for slacks) with a nice collared dress shirt or sweater (no tie necessary) and since it’s winter, a suit jacket or pea coat. I wouldn’t worry about seeming overbearingly stiff. The interviewer would appreciate the extra effort.
@TheDidactic I’m definitely going for the semi-formal look haha nice blazer, slacks, white shirt underneath. Yeah, I figured they’d judge by attire haha that’s why I immediately decided against my many pairs of torn jeans xP I thought a skirt would be overbearing, though, and I wouldn’t be comfortable in it because I never wear skirts.
I don’t like skirts. But then again, I’m more of the athlete type hahaha. It’s cold out so women have an excuse to not wear skirts. But even if it was warmer, I would rather go for dress pants if possible.
Every alumni is different like I said, but for the most part, tell your son to not be nervous! I was really nervous up until going in, but it was a nice back-and forth conversation between me and my interviewer. We quickly lightened up to each other which made the conversation have an easy tone and natural progression.
@TheDidactic my son? Haha I’m 17 and I’m the one who’s going to be interviewing
But thanks for the insight! I’m in Colorado and it was kind of difficult to set up the interview (I was practically calling the shots, to be honest, because he wouldn’t reply to my emails for several days at a time.) I hope it goes well!
Whoa, sorry for the confusion! It’s been a long day I guess hahaha. I misread the whole post, sorry!
But yeah, just stick to something semi-formal. Good luck with your interview!
@TheDidactic thanks, girl! Best wishes to you in the application process
