Didn't get any nibbles in College Admissions, so I figured I'd try here.

My niece told me last night that she got a fee waiver for some of her college apps, but was told it requires that she take the SAT/ACT, which won't happen in time for EA apps.

Is it really the case that she has to take the tests after she's been granted a fee waiver? It makes no sense to me. I don't want her to miss out on scholarship deadlines or EA because she has been given poor advice.

I know in order to get the four free scores, she'd have to retake, but I didn't think that was the case for actual college apps.

TIA!

Can you clarify…

has your niece already taken a SAT or ACT?

If so, are you asking if now that she has application fee wavers does she have to RETEST?

She has taken both the SAT and ACT, and is very happy with her ACT score. (Qualifies her for significant merit at UGA and Bama, and is high enough for the private schools she is considering.) No need to retest on that basis.

The GC told her she has to retake in order to get fee waivers for college applications. This does not make sense to me!

I think I understand – Did she get the fee waiver form from the college board? I believe that she would have had to use a fee waiver when she took the SAT/ACT to be eligible for their fee waivers.

However, if the college mailed her the fee waiver, ie we like you so you can apply for free, I wouldn’t think that she would need to do anything.

Finally, if she needs fee waivers now and didn’t last year, she can also investigate using the NACAC

[FAQs for Application Fee Waiver Form](http://www.nacacnet.org/studentinfo/feewaiver/Pages/default.aspx)

I think there are different types of fee waivers (others please correct me).

1) fee waivers to apply to a college.

2) fee waivers to take the SAT

3) fee waivers to take the ACT

4) fee waivers to send CSS Profile to a school for free.

It sounds like there’s a confusion about WHICH fee waiver the GC is talking about.

I can’t imagine that a student has to retake SAT or ACT in order to use a fee waiver for college application.

I think a GC can help a low income student get about 4 fee waivers for college applications.

That said, even if she had to retake the ACT or SAT (which I don’t think she has to), the EA school would just use her current scores if those have been sent to the school.

I would just have her download and use the NACAC waiver form if she’s unsure of whether the CB waiver is valid.

Does receiving an application fee waiver to Brandeis mean they are interested, or do these get sent to every kid who visits/interviews at Brandeis?

They get sent to everyone.
