My daughter is considering FSU for choral music ed. and I'm interested in getting feedback from parents of current music students at FSU. The stereotype of FSU is a party school, but the music classes we visited seemed to have smart, articulate students in them. We were impressed by the program. We also have security concerns. (While were were there a stabbing occurred in a dorm.) As a musician myself, I know music students tend to stay with their "own kind" which is reassuring. Anyway, I'd be happy to hear any feedback from parents ( or students) about experiences at FSU because by daughter's 2nd choice is the antithesis of a big state university!

I can’t tell you anything specifically but I can say that FSU has a good reputation for music in general and I think you’re in the right to be aware of security issues but not overly concerned because I’ve done a lot of research on a comparable school, University of Cincinnati (also very large), and although the university at large seems unsafe, I haven’t found anyone from their conservatory who has had any issues.

Thanks PianoMan12. I also am ambivalent about the fact that grad students teach alot of the music ed majors and the lower level theory and mus history classes…
