My daughter will be a journalism major and is looking for a high quality journalism school in an great college town. We are in Michigan and she would like to go OOS and would really prefer a somewhat warmer climate compared to Michigan (not terribly interested in Wisconsin or Minnesota).

All the schools in this list offer some sort of discount to OOS students from the midwest. University of Missouri would be perfect but they don't offer the Midwest Student Exchange Program discount for their Journalism school.

Wondering if I can get feedback as to which of these schools are in great college towns (such as Columbia) and have a decent journalism program. I don't think the size of the school matters as much as the town. Nebraska (Lincoln) jumps out to me - but what other schools should we consider (or cross off the list)?

I have no idea about journalism but these schools are in decent college towns…

KU
KSU
UNL

That is about it.

Truman State is a great school in a not so great town but worth a look.

Quite honestly, most of the rest are not worth attending as an OOS student especially when you compare them to the ikes of Michigan State, UNL, KU, etc. Some of the UW schols on the list are in nice towns, some not so much but the entire UW system is pretty good.

You might also consider looking at schools with less expensive OOS rates to begin with and/or good scholarships for OOS students. Look at…

Alabama
LSU
Ole Miss
Arizona State University
Ohio State
Iowa State

Never been there, but I’d look at the University of Kansas. Academically it’s about on a par with Nebraska and Missouri, which is to say quite good for this group of schools. It’s supposed to have a pretty decent J-School (though journalism is a pretty tough market these days), and lots of people identify Lawrence as one of the livelier Midwestern college towns, with an especially active local music scene. It’s also about as far south as you can get within the group of schools you’ve identified.

Thanks for the feedback. Will take a closer look at the schools mentioned…especially Kansas. My D is BIG into her music - it might be the perfect town for her.
