My DS is applying for the NROTC scholarship that being said UNC is on his list of mandatory 5 schools. His path of study will be electrical engineering. His academics are very strong as well as the remaining list of assets many of these kids have.

He just took his first SAT & ACT at the start of his Jr. year with no prep to get a baseline of where he stands.

SAT:
M - 640
R - 540
W - 630

ACT:
Composet - 28
English - 31
Science - 28
Math - 26

His current practice SAT exams have averaged in math between 680 - 720 and reading 590 to 630. His ACT math practice now has him in the 29 - 32 range, english is already good. He is signed up for a prep class of 8 students that will run for 8 weeks. His next SAT exam is May.

He would be applying from out of state which in itself is a tall task. Given some consideration to being an NROTC applicant and possible new SAT / ACT scores if he were to recieve the NROTC scholarship would it help with him getting accepted?

Even with the higher scores I don't think he would stand a chance getting in but he was hoping the NROTC might help.

We would like to visit the school; however, it would help if we had some idea of his odds. It would not make any sense to make the long trip if his chances are low. Any feedback is greatly appreciated, thank you in advance.

On a nother note I love food. Although this is all about my DS I must partake in some of that wonderful southern cooking. I lived in Va. for 4 years so I have some experience. I understand that there is a killer place to eat that was once on Man Vs. Food. If I'm coming down it will be very important to support the local establishments...please do tell!!

I don’t believe that UNC offers degrees in electrical engineering, or much engineering in the first place. Please, do a little more research on the schools you’re asking about before you post something like this next time. NC State has that major if he’s at all interested in studying in the RTP area of NC.

Probably the closest you can get to EE at UNC is Applied Science with a Materials track. Having said that, UNC isn’t ABET accredited, so it’d probably be safer to try a different school if he’s set on engineering.

Now that’s a shocker…I figured with a school like engineering would have been on their list of schools. Thank you for the tip. It’s my DS journey so he was doing all the footwork and research on schools. He was looking at this today so I’ll tell him to digress and go in a different direction. He was looking at UNC and Union College at the same time, I know Union has engineering.

I know his other though of study was physics so maybe that’s why he was looking there.

Bummer for me, I was really looking fwd. to eating!! I’ll have to make that up when we go visit U of Maryland!! For him it’s all about the college, for me it’s the reward in driving that I get to eat.

Thanks again…
