Currently there is a program that I am really interested in applying for, however I keep thinking that I should not even bother applying because I will not get chosen.

I'm looking into the Fulbright Commission UK Summer Program, and I meet the minimum qualifications (at least 18 years old, Freshman or Sophomore in College, 3.5 and above GPA) but I don't think I will make it. It's just that, I always think, there are others all over the US that are higher qualified than me. In high school I was active, I graduated with excellent grades and an IB diploma, I did lots of community service, and I was active in clubs and societies; but I feel like there are others that are so much more qualified.

It's really discouraging to think about. I feel like this program is EXTREMELY competitive. It's nationwide and very few students get chosen.

Another thing I am unsure of is that you need reference letters. I'm currently a Freshman in her second semester of college, and I'm not really close to any of my professors well enough that they could write me a great letter of recommendation.

I've been emailing my Director of Prestigious Awards in my Honors college about meeting, but she asked me for a resume, which I do not even have one prepared. Should I just cancel and try this program out again next year as a sophomore?

Put together a resume, and go meet the Director. She will be able to talk you through the whole process. I say apply this year. If you don’t get the award, what you learn from the application experience will help you be a better candidate next year.

Hi CarrieC92,

We are thrilled that you are interested in applying for one of our 2011 Summer Institute.

In making these awards the Commission is looking not only for academic excellence but a focused application, a range of extracurricular and community activities, an indication of ambassadorial skills, a desire to further the Fulbright Programme and a plan to give back to your home country upon returning.

As you can imagine, our Summer Programmes are very popular and as a result extremely competitive. We can only offer a set number of places each year and as a result we have to disappoint many students. However, if you dont apply then you wont stand a chance of gaining a place. I encourage you to read the application instructions and FAQs very carefully when you make your application, and ensure that you include all the required application materials. This way you can ensure that you have given yourself the best chance possible. We encourage anyone eligible and interested to apply for our awards.
