Feeling kinda hopeless... where can I get in?

*I don’t wanna go to a school where the average was 1100-1300, you know? *

Don’t know what you mean there. Are you talking M+CR or all 3 sections?

Anyway, don’t discount schools that have averages that are below yours. Larger schools have smart kids concentrated in various majors, and “more average” kids in others. So, don’t assume that you won’t be challenged.

I live in California, so… no instate tuition for me. As for budget, my parents have been wanting me to stay instate or go to a school that offers good financial aid. But we CAN afford it - if I really had my heart set on NYU (which frankly I don’t - I don’t think they have the greatest business OR journalism but could be wrong) I am somewhat sure they would pay for it. I’m gonna try to find out more about NYU’s journalism department, but it likely isn’t going to be one of my choices. I feel it’s selfish of me to ask my parents to pay such an enormous tuition when I am not really passionate about the school…

Are you kidding me? I’m not looking for pity. Like I said, 3.5 and 2100 are considered poor scores at MY school. And I didn’t really know that they’re actually considered decent scores elsewhere. Get over yourself. I’m the last person out there looking for public praise - I’m too ashamed to even tell people at my school what my GPA and test scores are because, even though I now know they’re decent, they are VERY low compared to all my classmates’. How the hell am I asking for public praise when I don’t even have a top GPA? People on here are posting with 4.3 GPAs, you honestly think I feel the need to brag about my 3.5??

Have you considered IU? Good journalism and business.

Soze, I’m curious. What’s so bad about Elon? When we toured, our guide who was a junior Journalism/Communications major, told us about her internship at 60 Minutes the previous yearr and her upcoming internship in London with CNN. Their facilities in the college of Journalism and Communications were impressive as well and the OP’s numbers are squarely in the middle 50% of the admitted students, so I’m not even sure it would be a safety for him.

So, what’s the problem with Elon?

Nothing’s wrong with it, I’m just pretty sure he could do a lot better.

According to collegeboard.com the middle 50% at Elon scored between 570 - 660 on each of the three sections.

That would give a composite range for the middle 50% between 1710 and 1980. That puts the OP over 100 points over the upper bound of the middle 50% and almost 400 points above the lower bound!

I’m not sure he would be too happy spending four years at a school where a quarter of the students scored over 400 points below him.

Elon is fine, but this guy can do much, much better. He has a reasonable shot at most of the UAA and even some of the NESCAC schools.

American University in DC has a great communications program with a strong internship programs and also a pretty good business school (Kogod). You should definately get in with that SAT score. They also have a strong honors program with merit aid, if you qualify (not sure with your GPA that you will qualify)

It’s true that Elon’s average SATs scores are somewhat lower than the OPs but the average GPA of the freshman class was 3.97 vs the OP’s 3.5. Given the quality of the Communications program, it seems like a good possible match for him.

For a reach you could shoot for Northwesterns school of communications

also, if your very serious about communications, Emerson college has one of the largest programs in the country.
