Feeling like a zombie. How do you cure insomnia?

So I've been literally unable to fall asleep before 5am for a couple months now. I'm neither willing to take medication nor drink myself to sleep every night despite the latter's undeniable appeal.

How do you force yourself to sleep?

See a doctor, get medicine.

Not an option.

google will give you better answers than CC

The scent of lavender is supposed to be calming, so maybe make some lavender tea.

Personally, I listen to music to calm me. I listen to artists/groups such as Libera, The King’s Singers, and Chanticleer. Eventually I just drift off, because I’m only listening to the sounds, not the words.

Cold baths also help.

Just stay up 24 hours and go to bed 10 PM the next day.

Insomnia and i are very good friends. What helps me are:

hot showers, as hot as you can stand it

Reading something absolutely boring

Writing essays for some odd reason

puzzels

video games (sometimes)

drawing

Advil PM works fine for me, but if you don’t want that, just start doing something really boring about a half hour before you go to sleep. Watch a documentary on different types of sand or something. You’ll be snoozing in no time.

NyQuil, dude.

Mary jane or pull an all-nighter

UAKid’s suggestion is what I usually do.

I have sleeping issues as well and here are some things I do to help me go to bed:

Read a book

Smoke pot (of course, not an option for everyone)

Drink warm milk

Pull an all nighter and sleep at a decent time the next night

Masturbate (lol, i know this is weird but it helps)

Yes, something like this. If you can’t handle that, set aside a week or so and go to bed progressively later each day (7 am, 10 am, 1 pm, etc.) until you get to your ideal bedtime.

I second UAKid and RioBravo
it’s what I do when I get myself into a bad sleep cycle

How much do you sleep each night? If you sleep until noon to compensate for going to bee at 5am, you are clearly able to sleep an adequate amount. If you can not sleep enough and are unwilling to take medication, there are few options that will work. Night time sleep-aid (diphenhydramine, OTC) tends to work pretty well. Have you thought about lighting up a blunt at night? ^_^

Do you exercise? Exercising helps with sleep.

Turn your A/C to ice cubes.

You’ve already gotten some good answers but I have personally found a very effective way to deal with my insomnia.

Using over-the-counter sleep aids may work in a bind where it seems impossible to sleep, such as an airplane, but they can seriously make you feel even more tired in the morning. Even better than over-the-counter sleep aids you have options in pill forms. Melatonin is a natural occurring hormone; taking a supplement can help relax your body and induce sleep.

To be honest, what has helped me the most has been a series of “relaxation” videos on youtube. I’ll send you a link, some may think of this as “creepy” but if you can just go with it you may find yourself drifting off to sleep very soon.

I have personally struggled with insomnia for many years, the videos alone are a great resource and I cannot tell you how many times I have fallen asleep. The link I will give you has many free relaxation scenarios and techniques on youtube. They are appropriately length (some even over an hour!) and are relaxing.

I suggest you look into WhisperCrystals relaxation videos.
All of her sessions are free to download if you’d like.

My personal favorite is “Paradise Island Message and Sleep Relaxation” You may find this on youtube as well!

I do realize these seem a little corny, but just go with it and you’ll at least be relaxed! It works wonders to visualize the scenes she describes. My sister laughs at me for this, but I swear by it!

Appreciate the suggestions. The reason I won’t take Rx medication (much less light up a blunt lol) is that I’m applying to govt jobs that require security and medical clearances. ANY prescription drug usage—regardless of legitimacy—is viewed negatively so I’d like to maintain a spotless medical record.

And I usually wake up at 9-10am. I probably also should start working out again.

Diphenhydramine is over the counter, not prescription. I take one and wake up feeling great. However, many people have had different experiences as mentioned above. Exercising daily and masturbating nightly helps.
