Yeah, I’m surprised the TSA doesn’t confiscate fists when you try to board an airplane.
Yup, they dominate CEO positions, boardrooms, and the Senate & House. Oh, wait… maybe not. The word-that-must-not-be-used comes to mind.
bodangles,
My only option is to stick it out for four years. Applying elsewhere is too risky because I may not get in anywhere good and I would waste a year of my life. And transferring is not an option because colleges with the same academic quality as this one have a 5% or lower acceptance rates for transfers.
preamble,
That’s why I started a petition asking the TSA to start confiscating fists!
@vfeavev - You didn’t do enough research, apparently. To reiterate what @bodangles said, you have three options.
- Drop out. Apply elsewhere and preserve that sweet, sweet freshman status for scholarships.
- Suck it up.
- Try to suck it up, fail, then hightail it out of there via a transfer. You will lose merit aid opportunities but at least you won’t be forced to do things that make you uncomfy.
Edit: Whoops, just saw your response to bodangles. Do you go to Brown? LOL.
intparent,
Every president of the United States since 2009 has been black. I don’t benefit from the priveleges because I come from a poor family.
You’re getting off topic. I came to college confidential to get some advice to deal with this for four years, not to start a debate.
If I were you I’d probably start looking into transfer options, low acceptance rates be damned. You are clearly very opposed to the culture of your school. That’s not a recipe for a happy four years in college. (Says the current sophomore who had a very unhappy first year in college and still came back. Maybe you’ll just buckle down and do the work and survive?)
On the other hand, maybe you’ll find like-minded people in specific clubs, classes, or activities. Is there an involvement fair you can attend, perhaps during this upcoming week? Might be worth checking out.
That is literally a sample size of one???
No, I don’t go to Brown. I go to a small liberal arts college in the north east.
@bodangles Every single mailman I’ve had since 2003 has been named Steve.
OP, you have to decide what is more important to you - campus culture or academic calibre. Four years of your life is no joke; if you’re gonna be unhappy, then maybe it’ll be worth to go down a notch in rankings with a transfer. People have given up a lot more for a lot less.
There is a word “liberal” in the liberal arts college.
I’ll look into transfer option during winter break if things don’t get better. We have a conservative union. I am thinking about joining them next week, but I have heard that a lot of conservatives here have to pretend to be liberal so they can keep their friends. My concern about joining the conservative union is that I’ll be limited to only being friends with them. I’ve never viewed my self as conservative, but I view my self as one here.
If i continue to hate it here, I will study abroad. But I’m limited to two semesters abroad. But unfortunately, I have to wait until my junior year to study abroad.
DrGoogle,
Many liberal arts colleges are very conservative, so what you’re saying is irrelevant.
Really, this is the type of thread and comments a first time poster would bring to CC? Not buying it for a minute. Same old same old.
We have no way of knowing exactly how you were treated, but having seen other situations like this I know that people who have the most to learn can feel like they are back in Kindergarten, even though that wasn’t the intent.
I was just kidding. You must have found one that fits my definition from what you wrote or worse.
When I was in high school, I was the most liberal person I knew. When I got to college, I was the most conservative person my roommates had ever met. It takes some time to adjust.
JustOneDad,
If it isn’t the intent to make us feel like we are in kindergarten , then why do we have to sit in stupid circles on the floor?
