<p>I wouldn’t put too much emphasis on the first semester grades. Sure, it’s important to keep up with the good grades, but it won’t replace grades from any other semester. And if you think that you’ll have way better luck with ED (and you really are sure you want to come to Duke), I would do ED because one good semester won’t make up for the advantage that you lose by going RD.</p>
