i’m planning on applying early action to most of the art schools i’m looking into and i wish desperately that i had others to talk to about it, but sadly all of my friends aren’t looking at the schools i am. really interested in saic, risd, calarts, pratt, parsons, etc. and feeling lonely with the search process and preparation for applying in only 7/8 months (yikes) so if anyone else is in the same boat i would love someone to talk with about it!!
You should visit the Visual Arts Majors sub-forum inside the College Majors forum. Go to the main page where all the forums are listed, and scroll down to find it. Or just follow this link: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/visual-arts-film-majors/
Moved to Visual Arts Forum.
you should seriously consider VCUARTS its ranked #2 USNWR only behind Yale for mfa and is also known to be a top design undergrad school located in very hip and artsy Richmond Va.
My son is a freshman at RISD. The application process was totally different than that of his peers, so I can sympathize! He was accepted at SAIC, SCAD, Ringling (Animation), MICA, and University of the Arts as well. Let me know if you have any questions about any of them.
Yep sending sympathy & support too - my oldest is a sophomore at RISD and youngest is a high school junior who will also be applying to art schools. You definitely have a lot more work to do than the usual common app applications. Good luck and there’s alot of parents and students on this forum who can answer any questions as you work through the process.
big relateee I live in the Midwest and am planning on moving a thousands of miles away (hopefully to RISD:>) and my only other friend looking at art school is turned off by the costs
the costs are scary!!
Yeah they really are! I’m nervous about getting scholarships (if I even get accepted lol) cause I heard risd was not too generous with them
@Jazzbutcher How did your son decide what to put on his portfolio? Thanks!!
Sorry for the long delay in replying. It’s essential to go to National Portfolio Day and visit each school you are interested in. They review your portfolio and give feedback about what to include, what’s missing and how to make it better in general. We took copious notes and each school ended up getting a slightly different portfolio. You will need figure drawing (i.e. nude) for some of the schools, including RISD and CalArts. We found a local class for him to do that. Everything will need to be scanned and them uploaded with a short description of each work. Some schools ask for a scan of your sketchbook, although CalArts wanted the original, which they later returned.
