My daughter recently submitted her fellows essays and we are wondering how competitive the process is to be invited to Fellows weekend? Can anyone share their experience of this weekend..what to expect?..is it very intense?

There’s some useful info on the Fellows Weekend at this forum site:

My D is accepted and her deposit is paid to be a Phoenix in the class of 2018. She received an email invitation to apply to be a Leadership Fellow earlier this week. Is this a common blanket email or more targeted? She would need to apply by midnight tomorrow and we are trying gauge if the effort is worth it in the short time frame.

I’m pretty sure it’s targeted. Our daughter was accepted ED (class of '17) and did not get an invitation.

The invitation to apply is targeted, based on information gleaned from the application and/or essays. The interview process, however, is pretty competitive. If your D has read about the Leadership fellows and thinks it might be an interesting path, then it is worth submitting the application and attending Fellows Week-end, which is wonderful. It also substitutes for Accepted Students week-end, so it’s not a special trip if you would be planning to attend that anyway. Just know that she will be competing for a limited # of spots, and she may not be chosen even if she feels she is a good candidate.

Thank you for the feedback.

Hot…Did your daughter apply? We are sorely disappointed that we did not know our daughter qualified for this until we visited a few days ago and saw how they calculate GPA themselves. They did send her an invite to apply, but she assumed she didn’t quite make the cut. I told her to fill it out anyway, but she did not. Big $ difference as the scholarship offers elsewhere are much higher than this, her favorite school so far.

Fellows competitions are by invitation only and are targeted at top students. This is where the bulk of merit aid is awarded. The competition is well worth attending if you’re invited and can make it. The kids get to spend some quality time on campus, get interviewed by a faculty member, attend a seminar and write a paper about the seminar. D enjoyed it when she attended last year.

Anyone can apply for Fellows.( But the deadline was January 10th.) Not everyone gets invited to Fellows weekend. And not everyone who goes to Fellows weekend will be offered a Fellowship.
