fellows?

Our D didn't get accepted into Fellows at first but was accepted after others declined admission to Elon. She is excited about the program (College Fellows) and even more so after the Washington trip. So don't despair if your child wasn't accepted in the first round.

my son is in the fellows program. Since his program has a huge majority of females I believe it is somewhat easier to get in if you are male. He has also indicated that several fellows have dropped out after one semester. Some because they change majors and some because they arent receiving additional money for being in the program. Its interesting that they split the fellows program in half with 50% receiving money and the remaining 50% not receiving anything other then the Presidential money.

I was reading this old post

It is the first time I heard that only half the Fellows actually get additional scholarships.

All Honors and Elon College Fellows get scholarship money. The other Fellows programs give money to a few of the selected students.

So what’s the latest scoop on Fellows? DD submitted app Sunday…fingers crossed!

From the Elon U Dean’s Desk:

January 15, 2010

Fellows Academic and Scholarship Program applications were also due on January 10. As of this morning, it appears this number will be approximately 1400.

The Fellows programs at Elon essentially package the very best of everything Elon is known for. Whether it’s the Honors, Elon College, Business, Communications, Teaching or Leadership Fellows program, all 192 freshman Fellows receive a one time $1000 study abroad grant and significant academic and extracurricular opportunities. Many also receive scholarships ranging from $2500 – $10,000 annually!

Each Fellows program has a faculty committee and beginning next week, these committees will review all applications for their respective programs. Approximately 60% of applicants will be invited to interview on campus that weekend. Candidates who do not receive an invitation are not advanced in the process. All Fellows invitations will be posted via On Track during the last week of January. You will also receive an e-mail and invitation and schedule via mail. Students must interview to be considered for a Fellows program or scholarship.
Students who were deferred or who applied FD and are selected to interview for Fellows will also receive an invitation to Fellows Weekend on the same day later this month. We’ll essentially fast forward a decision on your application so you have it in late January.

Thanks for the update, Scoutmom.

Does anyone know from experience the most important factors in Fellows selection? And if 60% are invited, what percentage are offered the Fellows program? 192/1400= ca.14% 192/60%= ca. 23% (?) Brochure says 40 College Fellows scholarships and 50 Honors Fellow Scholarships, so just those are 90 of 192, a very good percentage of scholarsips among Fellows, but reading above once more, 100% of College and Honors Fellows are offered scholarships.

Scholarship money in 2006-2007 was offered to half of the college fellows. My daughter was one of those who actually turned down the college fellows program because she has an incredibly demanding major and we felt that the added stress of the fellows program without additional money was not worth it. When she turned the program down, we were told that others had also done the same thing and that there had been complaints about how it didn’t seem fair to give some kids money and others none, for the same honor, same demands of the fellows program. The next year, 2007-2008, they changed the program, now have fewer college fellows, but ALL receive scholarship money.

I don’t know if anyone noticed this… but I believe that Ontrack previously said that we would receive a decision about an invitation to attend Fellows Weekend on the 28th of January, but now it says we will hear the 27th. Not minding the slightly shorter wait!

Good to know! I applied for National Teaching Fellows and am verrrrrrrrry anxious to find out!

question: i got deferred EA from elon. i applied to the leadership fellows program in december though, and on Ontrack they do have my application. so am i being considered for the program, even though i am deferred?

Per the Deans Desk Blog

Honestly grades and scores won’t have too much to do with it. Will more then likely be the essay, EC’s and community service that will decide it for the leadership fellows. If they think you might be worth a chance then they will invite you to the weekend where they can actually get to know you.

Here’s what my leadership stuff looks like:

Co-Founder/Co-President of Amnesty International Club
Treasurer of National Honors Society
Co-Founder/Co-President of Movie Club
Junior tour guide
Senior leader of tour guides

volunteer at elementary school every summer
lots more! 511 service learning hours

The isabella cannon leadership fellows program at Elon is wonderful and while 3 months ago it might have been useful to ask “can I get in” or how should I present my accomplishments, I think for now it’s just best to wish you the very best of luck and remind you that decisions will be made and invitations sent in the next week or so… Hang in and good luck.

^^ well i’m certainly not asking for your opinion.

anyways, what time do you think decisions will be released on OnTrack? 12:00 am?

i sure hope so! i want to know already!

hum, should i stay up to see?

does anyone have any idea when the decisions come out?
