Ok, my cousin is female and she applied to SEAS. She has only an 1860 on her SAT but she says that since shes a girl (and therefore a minority in the SEAS student body) her low SAT score won't be that big a deal. Is this true, cause it sounds like total bull***** to me.

its true to some extent, but they will not let u in with scores that are THAT low! They're definately not desperate and usually ED candidates get more help in that respect...but yea, no offense but that's an automatic rejection with an 1860.

well, nothing's an automatic rejection, but "being a girl" isn't enough to offset that. barring significant disadvantage growing up, an average score of 620 isn't going to impress anyone. Heck, I think my public high school had that as an average SAT Math score.

It's easier for girls to get into engineering programs in general, not just SEAS. It may help a little but if she is significantly below average, then she won't be admitted.

This is wrong. There's still "girl affirmative action" in SEAS (and at schools like MIT where there are more girls than ever before), but it's definitely less of benefit than it has been in year's past.

I ditto what everyone else has said; that the small bump doesn't make up for SAT scores suggesting a lack of ability to do Columbia-level work.

Well would it help if I'm a guy applying for english literature? hmm...

would WHAT help? "being a female"? I wouldn't go for that sex change operation just yet if that's what you're asking.

For SEAS, the middle range SAT (CR+M) is about 1440 - 1540
1860 is too low, unless you have somethings very special, for example
Intel / Simens science talent search rewards or some national / international
level rewards.
At 1860, I don't think any ECs will help
BTW, the ratio for SEAS female : male = 1 / 3, same as Cornell
in MIT, that is about 50 : 50

What about a 2110 SAT? Haha, I'm so screwed.

u no sats are quite faulty

What would you predict for a female SEAS applicant with 35 ACT (36 math), and 800s on SAT II Math IIC and Physics?

I think the admit rate for MIT female undergraduates is something like 30-35%. I remember reading something about this a few years ago.

"What would you predict for a female SEAS applicant with 35 ACT (36 math), and 800s on SAT II Math IIC and Physics?"

Well Columbia College gets a lot of female apps to balance out the SEAS male/female ratio. So it wont be that much of a boost. But at someplace like MIT or Caltech where liberal arts are not emphasized, her chances would be very high because those schools as a whole tend to attract too many male students.
