I posted this in the chances thread, didn't get any responses. This can die out fast I don't mind, I just wanted a few responses.. Thanks guys. Also note that some of the scores are what I am predicting I will get (realistically). Based on this, do you think I could get in? What do you think i should do before applying that would boost my application? (I'll be a senior in Fall)

If I’ve redone my grades right, you’re on par with me GPA-wise.

Personally, I’d pump up the SAT a bit more and maybe take a third SAT II that’s not related to my major (in my case, it was Math IIC).

EC’s look go, I’d say go for more diversity in that. Sports, etc. Was confused whether you meant you started JV soccer sophomore year, or that was your only year of soccer.

However, I got into L&S, you may have a harder time with Engineering.

Yeah… I know Berkeley is known for Engineering and is very competitive in that field along with psychology… I’m hoping that being female will help, and also being interested in both majors may show I’m more well rounded…

I thought my extracurriculars showed pretty good leadership (hear that is big for cal admissions). You suggested sports, I plan to be football manager this year. (I’m not going to bother trying out for soccer because the best ill do is JV which doesn’t look good for a senior haha) Any other suggestions for diverse extracurriculars? Also, I did cross country sophomore/ junior year but had some respiratory problems so i had to quit both times half way in. So i can’t really put that on my app. I’m in relatively good shape though. Fall sports are- football (manager), volleyball (I’d be jv), Tennis ( i could do Varsity), and Cross Country. Winter sports are just soccer and basketball. Not all that interested in basketball. Soccer i stated above.

So get my SAT to around a 2200? I honestly don’t think ill get much higher than that :/

SAT’s are jumping through the hoop, honestly. I got mine through taking tests repeatedly and focusing on every word I read for the problems.

Whatever can get you stronger, do it. AP’s look stronger, I’d personally say Bio and Physics is pushing it on the stress level for a senior.

Manager isn’t a sport, but if you have respiratory issues, it’s an easy way to say that though you couldn’t be involved directly in the sports, you still wanted to diversify, it’s just your body literally couldn’t take it.

Job if you want to add it, but not as important. Otherwise, i’d say you’re Berkeley-material.

You should be fine in terms of getting in for MechE though the 1 on the AP Chem test is a bit worrisome and passing only two AP exams out of 5 attempted. Still MechE is one of the easier engineering programs to get into. If your said you wanted to get into EECS, I think your chances are much slimer.

Edit: The engineering school doesn’t just want a high GPA and good SATs and stuff. They’d also like to see lots of APs in a variety of subject matters too. My salutorian didn’t get in to Berkeley Engineering EECS, I suspect, for such reasons.

Why would AP classes count and not AP scores? It seems like the latter is a better approximation of your proficiency in a subject because the exams are standardized.

They may not count but having them be seen may hurt. Since Berkeley actually lets you use AP credit for course credit, taking an AP exam would be seen kind of like taking a college final to a certain degree. Failing more than one or two AP exams may be seen as an implication that handling college level material may be hard for you.

Your SAT scores are exceptional. I have multiple friends who got into Cal with 1600s/2400. I can’t say I understand why Cal accepted those people (all Hispanic btw, though UCs don’t practice affirmative action).

For my APs- There were 10 people in my AP Chem class, only one passed, with a three, and she is a harvard legacy. I’m guessing it had to do with the teaching.

Our history teacher was new to teaching AP. So I didn’t do to well. (Plus I hate history)

As for english, like i said im approximating some of these scores. I haven’t taken the test yet. The tests i have taken are history and chem, sophomore year.

I just want to see if I can reach my goals, could i realistically get into Berkeley.

Also, I am taking AP Psych without taking the class, so that shows something.
I don’t have to send in my bad scores I believe though, so it can’t do any harm?
