FERPA waiver?

On the Common App site, they have this page where you get to decide whether to waiver your rights to see the forms your counselor and teachers submit. What are the disadvantages or advantages to refusing to waiver my rights? I don't really understand this: if there are no repercussions, then why do most people I know still choose to waiver their rights to see the forms? Can anyone explain this?

Thank you so much!

Colleges prefer that you waive it, under the presumption that a recommendation may be less than honest if the person being recommended will be able to see it later.

Thank you n0vad3m0n and Billymc. I think I’ll waive the right :)

Many guidance counselors believe that college admissions officers don’t believe that the referees will tell the truth if the right is not waived. However, I have yet to see any hard evidence (as in a specific quotation from a specific individual representing a specific institution of higher education) that this is true.
