few questions about tests

hi, I just have a few questions regarding two of the tests that may or may not be required by FSU. what exactly is the CLAST exam? who is the test for? is it required in order to graduate? is it required to transfer to another school?

I've taken five semesters of Spanish in high school but never took AP Spanish and was surprised to find out that I had to take foreign language courses at FSU again. my advisor said I could take the foreign language placement test to see if I could be exempt from taking Spanish again. is this possible? how easy is the language test? is there a time limit?

My daughter who had taken Spanish in high school through AP Spanish language took the Spanish placement language test at FSU and found it to be quite simple. The entire test is on computer and is multiple choice. (There is no listening section.) The time limit is an hour (I think) but it only took my d 30 minutes to take it. She scored high enough to be exempt from taking any further foreign language at FSU, but since she is planning to minor in Spanish she took the advanced course placement instead.

If Spanish is a strength for you, you may want to take the CLEP exam for Spanish for college credit. The CLEP exam is multiple choice with a listening section.

Here's all of the information about CLAST you can read, taken from the Undergraduate Bulletin: Florida State University Registrar

Short of it is: unless you came into Florida State with below a 500 math and/or a 500 verbal (Critical Reading, I think; I'm not sure about the Writing portion as there's an essay portion on CLAST) on the SAT OR below a 21 in math/22 in reading/21 in English on the ACT, OR received below a 2.5 in your English or math courses at a post-secondary institution, you won't have to take CLAST.
