Hello all. I've a friend that goes to a CC in Southern California. He has potential, but he messed up in his early high school years, so he decided to enroll in a CC and later transfer. Now, he originally enrolled as a Physics major (like myself), but recently told me he wants to switch majors to Engineering (again, like myself).

Now, I've told him what I have gathered from some of the wiser members of this website. For example, as a CC student, schools tend to view him with the mindset of "someone who intended to transfer all along", which isn't wrong. At the same time, since he wants to transfer into a UC school, I informed him about the TAG program, and recently found out about the TAP program for certain schools like Berkely (which has been our dream school since middle school).

Now, I have heard that the TAP program is invite only. I've also heard it targets URMs and low income students. My friend is Salvadorian, considered part of the LGBT community, and from one of the most impoverished and crime-riddled areas of the country, so I feel like the TAP program would be perfect for him, if he can catch their notice.

So, first question, can anyone tell me how someone interested in the program can get in it?

Also, I advised him to take pre-requisite classes soon if he intends to switch majors. As i understand (and I may be wrong about this, correct me if I am), you must transfer as part of the college of engineering to remain in the engineering major. I remember being told that transfer students can't switch into engineering if they had not entered the school as one.

Second question, can anyone confirm if what I have heard and just listed is true? If not, how does it work?
