Im a Canadian citizen living outside Canada and currently in an American High school curriculum (I’ll be done with high school in 2016)… Just had a few questions regarding UBC and its requirements/admissions… So what really is a good enough SAT score that would not affect my admission in a negative way? What about the TOEFL and the SAT IIs?How can I increase my chances of getting accepted into UBC ( Its my #1 choice) ? Any advice for admissions, personal statements,essays etc.? Thanks in advance!
UBC, UToronto, McGill and Waterloo are informally known as the Canadian Ivies. These schools are highly sought over domestically and admissions aren’t getting tougher every year. As an American applicant, you should aim for a GPA over 3.7 or so. The acceptance rate overall last year was about 25 percent or so … which is pretty high. Don’t let this fool you into thinking UBC is not a competitive school. Canadian schools work by accepting a higher number of students, and then weeding them out in first year and when they apply for their major (yes, you have to apply for your major in second or third year). Sought after majors have higher cutoff GPAs Eg economics may need an 80 percent average to get in, which only 20 percent of the student population achieves. Hope this helped.
I’m in the exact same situation as you. I really want to get into UBC but my gpa isn’t that great. I have great extracurriculars though and I’m trying to get into the faculty of arts. According to what I’ve seen online, the acceptance rate is in the 60s. Also I’ve heard that UBC really takes their personal profile serious for the admission process. The TOEFL is only required if you have trouble with English. Your blog post and success in an American high school shows that you have sufficient mastery of English.
As for what SAT score you need, that’s tough to answer. I think the strength of your academic courses (especially in 11th and 12th grade) are the most important. As long as you do decent on your SAT or ACT, you will be fine. Your personal profile and statement are also very important. Since you are Canadian, the application fee is lower and you will qualify for much lower tuition. But if you want to apply for aid or entrance scholarships, you need to apply early. Check the website for details.
Lastly, different schools have different admission criteria. For example, you could get into UBC into the Faculty of Arts but not some of the more competitive programs (e.g. bachelor of commerce). When you apply, you can submit a 1st and 2nd choice. Many get into one or the other. I also agree with the poster above that the school is academically challenging and some students who get in struggle to compete. The “Canadian Ivy” reference is accurate.
