Few Questions

Hey all,

I’m applying EA this year and just have a few questions about the process.

  1. Is there an honors college for engineering students? If so is there a separate application?
  2. If I am admitted as an engineering student, is it difficult to transfer to computer science once I am at school?
  3. Are there any merit scholarships available for OOS students? If so, are there separate applications for these?

Thank you in advance!!

  1. Yes, but you don't apply for that straight out of high school
  2. Computer science is a potential route within Engineering, so a transfer is not necessary.
  3. Based purely off of merit? I don't believe so for OOS. Anyone can correct me on that but none of my OOS friends got merit scholarships from the University.
  1. There are a few merit-based scholarships for OOS in CoE. Notably, the CoE Scholarship of Honor is awarded to both in-state and OOS applicants based on merit only and requires no separate application (but do apply to UM early). See http://scholarships.engin.umich.edu/new-students/ for more details, including some scholarships that do require separate applications.

There are definitely merit scholarships for OOS students. The Engineering scholarship of honor is $8000/yr for in-state and $20,000 for OOS. The equivalent scholarships at LSA is $10,000-$20,000 for OOS and $5000-$10000 for in-state. There are also other scholarships (larger and smaller) for both in-state and OOS students.

@billcsho Thanks! Do you happen to know how competitive the engineering scholarships of honor tend to be? Are they based mostly off of grades/test scores or do they look at essays as well?

@runna67 No essay or even application required for the engineering scholarships of honor. Any scholarships at that level are very competitive. My D got it with ACT35/uwGPA4.0 a few years ago. She also got 800 in both SAT2 and 5 in all APs but I don’t think they considered them. It is still not purely based on scores and GPA. My friend’s son did not get it with ACT36/GPA4.0.

@billcsho Okay! Thanks for responding!
