Question 1: Food at GT is pretty disappointing (at least it is the general consensus). Woody’s >> Britain anyday, but if you are expecting something like you ate at FASET or on another Tour Date, then you’re SOL. However, there lies a very good number of options within walking distance from Tech Campus and for Delivery (Krystals, Mickie Ds, BK, 2 Chinese Restaurants, City Cafe, Rocky Mountain, Firehouse Subs, Papa Johns, Moes, and a few more), so yeah, I’d go for the lowest meal count you can possibly get.

Question 2: Internet is second, after the Pentagon. Download speeds are superb, but I would highly advise against using bittorrent or any related software unless you know of ways to hide yourself from the world. Because the school (OIT) will catch you and suspend your account.

Question 3: Considering that GT is located in ATL and ATL is home to a lot of colleges/universities, you’re bound to see a lot of non-GT students at the parties (especially the GSU students). The parties tend to blow, appealing more to the females (it is a Fraternity party after all), but if you know some of the brothers who are hosting the party you should be fine. ATL also is home to a lot of clubs and those clubs have started hosting 18+ parties lately and those are usually pretty fun (especially the parties at Opera and Lynx).

Hope this [long] reply answered all your questions!

thanks mate, that was almost everything i was looking for.

1 question though: Does the school cafateria have a card that you pay, perhaps a 1000 dollars a year and you can go in anytime an unlimited amount of times? Or do programs like that just exist in my dreams.

OIT can catch you because on your first day of move-in, in order to access your internet, you have register your computer with OIT through a LAN. With this, they get your computer information. To be truthful though, OIT could care less about you downloading, it is when you are uploading when they get worried.

As for music, there is a ‘program’ that Georgia Tech bought for its students ‘free’ of charge that is called Ruckus. You can download songs, but you will not be able to put them on your iPod or any other musical device. This program also allows you to download movies, but the student has to pay for this fee. As with everything however, if you would still like to use bittorrent however, there ARE always ways to circumvent the problem with OIT. It is just a matter of doing some good google research :).

Yes, there exists a unlimited plan which allows you to go in at any time, any number of times during the days and week that the cafeterias are open.

Yeah, def don’t upload anything. I dl all the time…and it is great, you’ll never wanna go anywhere else because it’s always slower. Bittorrent is also the safe way to go, people get caught dl-ing off of programs like limewire and such but not torrents.

I don’t mind the food at the dining halls…it’s just that they never really change anything up. Sometimes its a good thing, when all you really want is a burger and fries they always have burgers and fries. Just make sure you hit the crc, because half of that crap is horrible for you. If you plan on playing sports or anything, go with unlimited…but if you’re not a big eater, just do the 14 per week. Just remember, it closes at 10pm so if you eat a lot after 10 then get less meals and buy more food for the dorm

thanks a bunch guys for clearing up the information.

So generally how fast is internet at Georgia Tech. If you were to download a file how many kb/s could you download without any restrictions. Also what is the speed of the upload. If the speed is like 500 kb/s or something around there, would it be ok for me to upload at about 30 kb/s ?? I was thinking about uploading at 6 or 7 % the total upload speed if i ever had to upload pictures or something.

When I lived at the dorms several years ago, I dont know anyone who got targeted by resnet. There was massive amounts of sharing going on, especially because it was when i2hub existed (too bad you missed that boat. it was incredible. gig/second speeds for downloading movies).

There were people who got sued by the RIAA. I doubt GT resnet will monitor you independently unless you are doing massive, massive amounts of uploading. BUT the MPAA does that thing where they send letters to ISP’s with IP addresses now, and if you get nabbed on that you will probably get a warning. Also make sure you dont get sued by the RIAA (dont know if they are still doing that or not).

At Woodruff, the quality ranges from very bad to good. It’s particularly bad on Fridays and Saturdays. Regularity recommences at Sunday dinner. Sometimes, though, the food is good. For example, if Woodruff is serving buffalo chicken wraps, my friends and I generally never leave unless we’ve eaten at least two. Also, on the last day of Spring 2007, Woodruff served fried chicken and collard greens, and that was some of the best fried chicken I’ve ever had. They had previously made fried chicken, but it was never that good.

There is variety, and you won’t get sick of the food unless you eat the same thing (i.e pizza) every day.

You are now allowed to use your meal plan at the Student Center food court’s main line for dinner from Monday to Thursday. I frequently went there for dinner during Fall semester when it was more convenient, and the food was never bad. Their quality ranges from good to excellent.

The Internet at Georgia Tech really deserves to be called amazing. It spoils you, for when you are not on campus, you will forever be asking yourself, “Why is this so slow?” You can download on BitTorrent. Not everything on BitTorrent is illegal, for example, most Linux distributions now use torrents, and some of these ISO images are sized in gigabytes.

According to Resnet, “Anything in excess of 1 Gigabyte over a span of 24 hours is far beyond normal usage.” Have people been caught downloading illegal material? Yes, it happened to one of my close friends. However, in his case, it was due to a complete lack of common sense. He downloaded over ten gigabytes in less than one day. Obviously, that’s going to raise suspicion.

I’m not into parties. I went to two parties all last year, one at a fraternity and one at an off-campus house. I don’t see the “point” of partying. If you want alcohol, fraternity parties are suboptimal. No registered fraternity party can have alcohol in plain sight. By contrast, there’s no such rule for off-campus parties; the kegs and coolers are not hidden, and all help themselves. If you want to have fun, meet girls, and so forth, then it doesn’t matter. Either will do.

Isn’t illegal music/movie downloading restricted in all colleges? My sister over at BU was complaining the other day about not being able to download any music.

But according to the previous responses, are you guys saying that these downloads are ‘allowed’ as long as they’re below 1gb per day? Would I be fine if I were downloading, say, 4 songs in a random day?

And I’ve seen somewhere that the dorms at GT don’t have any wireless internet available, is this true?

It’s discouraged everywhere but not restricted. If someone can obtain ten gigabytes of movies in one day, then it’s most certainly not restricted.

Regarding your second question, illegal downloads are never “allowed.” It’s just that Resnet / OIT won’t flag your account unless you’re making it obvious.

As far as I know, all dorms have wireless. You can practically get a signal anywhere on campus. I remember walking to a hall council meeting with a friend. Both of us took our laptops there, and both of us still got “excellent” signals on the way from our dorm to the building across the street.

does anybody know what the speed of upload is? If i were to upload a file to rapidshare or megaupload. How many kb/s would it upload? And if i were to download a file from megaupload, how many kb/s would it be when you download?

I’m probably just paranoid because of the RIDICULOUS online censorship I got used to in the Cobb County public school system, but does OIT have the capability to monitor your internet usage beyond the obvious upload/download amounts? In the CCSD, simply searching a female name in Google would shut down the browser and was likely to get you a counselor referral.

LMAO… I remember CCSD censoring us! Those were the good ol’ days of high school.

At Georgia Tech, they don’t censor or block anything. There are no quotas. It’s pretty free… they just have “suggestions” of how to use your Internet. So, don’t go downloading 10G of shows and music, and you shouldn’t be flagged.

The downstream for the connection is ~2Gbps (so, most ethernet cards can’t handle all the bandwidth, and most servers don’t have fast-enough uplinks to reach that point). The upstream ranges from .9Mbps - 2Mbps.

wow that is amazing. Also seeing how the kids at gt are pretty smart, do you have to watch out for computer hackers? also is their like a massive shared folder on the whole gt network where people can put movies and stuff?
