Fiat Lux classes

How do these work? (how do I register, how do they factor in with units and requirements in general, cost/textbooks, what are the advantages or is this just like an "interest" kind of thing, what goes on in the classes)

Thanks for helping with my other questions too!

and... this is my likely schedule then for first quarter:

Math 3B
Chem 20A
Cluster 20A (IRD)

any comments?

thanks again!

Fiat Lux classes are great. They are simple one-unit classes that you pass if you show up to all the lectures (there is no letter grading here). Usually its a lecture/discussion with a great professor about some topic that he/she is involved in. They are pretty cool classes overall since there is no pressure for grading or anything on the students or professor. If there is one on a topic that interests you, then definitely take it.

fiat lux seminars are only 1 unit and are all graded pass/no pass. its pretty much just interest based. doesnt do anything for requirements, really light if any workload, and for the two that i have taken, no textbooks were required.

I think they count towards College Honors credit. :)

you can count up to 2 for college honors credit i believe.

how do I register

you register for them just like any other class. and you'll learn how to register for classes during orientation.

i've actually had to purchase books or course readers for my fiat luxes. i felt like they were a waste of money for a 1-unit course.

i took several fiat luxes during my freshman year and they vary in quality. the first one i took was "intro to negotiation" and it was a really good one!!! so i kept taking more thinking the other fiat luxes would be that great, but some were mediocre and some were just boring.

Hmmm.. I should have looked more into them. Now it's too late. :(

you can still take them even if youre not a freshman, but freshmen get priority in enrolling in them

Oh, thanks for the info, kfc!

Since Fiat Lux Seminars are so light in workload, would it be feasible to take them as a 5th class? I'm trying to figure out my schedule and I think it might potentially be...

CHIN 1 ELEM MODERN CHINESE
COMM ST 10 INTRO-COMMCTN STDS
POL SCI 50 INTRO-COMPRTV PLTCS
GE CLST 23A INSIDE PERFORM ARTS

Do you think I could add a Fiat Lux Sem to that? Or would that be overkill? Do Fiat Lux Sems usually count as a whole class in the schedule? (So it would be my 5th class?)

pher2006,

just in case.... you have to go to murphy A316 to petition for more units. the unit cap is 19, but your schedule is currently at 20.

your schedule's pretty heavy for a freshman. i know cluster's are supposed to be tougher, and comm 10 i heard is a lot of work. i dont think the fiat lux will kill you, but there's a good chance that you might not have enough time to do all the reading for it or whatever and may end up not enjoying it.

thanks kfc4u (:

Unfortunately, I just checked the poli sci classes again... they're basically all full so i have to change my schedule a bit.

CHIN 1 ELEM MODERN CHINESE
COMM ST 10 INTRO-COMMCTN STDS
A&O SCI 3 INTR-ATMOS ENVIRMNT
GE CLST 23A INSIDE PERFORM ARTS

This should hopefully work out since currently all slots for these courses are all open... knock on wood. Plus Atmo3 should hopefully be much easier than PS 50 would have been. I read on Bruinwalk that Lew's (Atmo 3 prof) quizzes are open note, open book, and open PARTNER :D And if Atmo 3 is full by orientation, Astro 3 would be a good replacement, I think.

that's a more manageable schedule. you still have to petition to take over 19 units though. dude, professor lew LIVED on my floor the past 2 years (sproul 2-south). dunno where he moved to now that sproul is closed for renovation. i heard his class is pretty easy.

yup, professor lew was Sproul's "faculty in residence." He went to UCLA himself for college/grad school and he kind of reminded me of a student, just much older. I would see him on campus walking around with a backpack. Cool guy, he had his own show on the on-campus housing TV network called "tex-mex cooking with Dr. Lew" or something, it was pretty funny.

can i take 2 fiat lux classes in a quarter?

yes u can.

You cannot take more than 19 units your first quarter of freshman year because you have to petition. I believe you need at least a 3.0 UC GPA for them to approve. Since you are an entering freshman, you won't have a UC GPA (unless you took some classes at a UC already in high school).

If I have enough credit to be counted as a sophomore next quarter, can I still take fiat lux classes?

yes. class standing is irrelevant, it's what year you are. it's not even much of a worry anyway because anybody can actually take them; i took a fiat lux when i was a 2nd year and there was a girl in my class who was a 4th year. as far as i know, they become open to all class standings once all the 1st years have a chance to register for them.
