I'm really interested in the freshman seminars. Can you enroll in two or three in a quarter, or is there a limit? Thanks. I'll be entering college Fall 2008, and I'm currently a high school senior.

yeah i was enrolled in 3 fall quarter. you can technically do up to 5

Yes can, I knew someone who was taking 2, but personally, I find them to be useless, as they don't fulfill any requirement(Unless you need a 1 unit class to become full-time to meet your ECP) and do not benefit your GPA.

or if you're one unit short of graduating.

or if you want 1 unit to boost your class standing. can't hurt.
i only took one fiat lux and since it was early morning i failed from attendance... yah...

I'd recommend them. I took one fall quarter on surgery, and now I'm working clinic hours on Mondays with the Doctor that ran it. I'm taking 2 right now, one is very interesting and I enjoy the material, so it's a lot of fun, while the other was kinda meh, but not bad by any means.

I'd say go for it, it's basically free units.

I TOTALLY RECOMMEND THEM!!! I took one about medicine, and one on "the hidden side of female desires". Look up the thread for the latter, it is quite long. I like them because you learn quite a bit in a relaxed environment where you don't have to worry too much about grading and such. Attendance matters a lot in these classes though, sometimes you fail if you miss even ONE class. I don't think there are any restrictions on how many you can take, but I am not too sure. One of my friends took 3 of them during the fall though. Get to an early orientation session though, those suckers fill up pretty fast.. at least the good ones anyways.

Oh yeah BTW, don't listen to MrSpam. I know him, and know that he has never taken any fiat luxes and does not speak from experience--he just says that because apparently that is what BoelterHall said. He is right about it not filling any requirements besides ECP, and that it doesn't help your GPA at all, but that is not the point of the class. So if you don't care about exploring different topics in college, and just want to get by and fulfill the bare minimum requirements for your degree and get a high GPA, then don't take the fiat lux, otherwise I think they are great.

Sorry to totally go against your post Spam.

Totes agree with mrMOO. Spam's full of **** ;D

^the name speaks for itself?

I don't appreciate this...:(

I actually did take a fiat lux, but dropped it because I felt it wasn't worth my time.

i think u cant take more than one for engineering

I don't think you even stuck out the fiat lux for 3 sessions Spam!

Ya...well...no one needs to know that.

Fiat Lux classes also fulfill one unit of honors credit(you can only petition to have two classes count for honors though). The two I took involved lots of round table discussions, so if you like that I'd recommend it.

mrM00, which Medicine one were you in and what quarter?

I took Med 19: Intro to Surgery this past fall with Dr. Maish, were you in there?

Ahh sweeet I'd love these classes. That's what I love about UCLA. Quarter system + freshman seminars. You get to put in a lot more classes than in other colleges ...like the ivies.

Lol on the hidden side of female desires.
I'm guessing that class is all guys?

No, it was half girls, half guys. In the past, apparently, the guys had been outnumbered.

Asura, I took the one with Melamed, med 19, not sure what the title of the class was. So we weren't in the same class. We talked a lot about just issues in health care, the flu, various other diseases, and in the end some chief anesthesiologist came and gave a presentation.
