So, I read past threads about fiat lux seminars and most people seemed to say that they are a great way to get some variety, but might be too much work for one unit. Since the grade is Pass/No pass and everything..it's pretty much not going to affect your GPA right and is for personal enrichment?

I know it counts for honors creditt...but lets say you take some interesting classes and pass them all..would med school recognize this and look favorably upon you..or is it just for urself

^
Thats impossible because you’re capped at two fiat luxes per quarter. Freshmen also get priority for fiat luxes so its very hard to get in one after your first year.

I’m thinking about taking one of these fiat lux classes:

Student Activism from Sixties to Present (Rhoads)
Racism (Hammond)
Al-Qaeda and Jihadi Islam (Gelvin)
Politically Incorrect Introduction to Current Topics in Science and Medicine (Teplow)

Rhoads, Hammond, and Gelvin have pretty good reviews on bruinwalk. There is nothing on Teplow though.

I’m leaning towards student activism and racism.

I suggest “Future of Nuclear Weapons” with Dr. Carnesale… if you’re interested in politics. He’s the former chancellor of UCLA, president of Harvard School of Government, and a major participant in nuclear diplomacy during the cold war.

My current major is Undeclared-Physical Sciences but I doubt I will stick with it. I’m thinking about majoring in math/applied science or biz-econ. maybe pre-med. I really don’t know yet…

You 're welcome. I haven’t taken the class…but really look forward too it.

Here is the course description btw:

National security is prominent concern in minds of Americans and major focus of U.S. government. It is generally agreed that greatest threat is posed by nuclear weapons in hands of hostile nations or terrorist organizations. Focus on incentives and disincentives for acquiring and maintaining nuclear arsenals, relationship between nuclear power and nuclear weapons, role of arms control agreements, current hard cases in nuclear proliferation (e.g., North Korea and Iran), and alternative futures for nuclear stockpiles.

For Fiat Luxes, take Teo’s (aka Ruiz) Los Angeles seminar! It only meets three times a quarter, and one meeting is where he takes you on a trip to downtown LA and you get to look at the architecture and really get a glimpse at what you really, really expect to see out of LA (well, for me. Westwood is really… confining?). And Teo is a really, really great professor and its a fantastic chance to get acquainted with him.

I really want to take Future of Nuclear Weapons (fiat lux).

If I did, my classes would start from 11:00 AM except on Monday. Isn’t that kind of late?
On Tuesday I would have to walk from bunche to geology (which is kind of far) in 10 minutes.
I would also have 3 (4 on Monday) consecutive classes with 10 min in between them.

Does anyone think I should take the fiat lux despite the changes it would make in my schedule?

The fiat lux classes don’t have finals schedules posted up. I’d like to take a seminar, but not if it’s final is on the same day as another final.

I was thinking maybe a physics seminar or the one on movies or the one on cartoons.

I was told that if there isn’t a final schedule posted, you don’t have to worry about conflicts. I don’t think Fiat Luxes have finals anyway usually.
