Tell me about the fiddling or contra dance communities at your respective colleges, please.

Perhaps I was a bit too specific- What about music culture in general? ANYONE?

UChicago has a contra on campus the first Friday of every month. Not often enough for my S! There are some in outer burbs on Monday nights, though not really accessible by public transit.

DC area – there is a BIG contra at Glen Echo Park every Friday night and Sunday afternoon. Second Friday of the month is open band night and lots of folks bring their instruments and go to it. 300-400 people dancing and playing = good times.

Bsoton – MIT has a regular contra on-campus, and there are a fair number in the relatively near burbs. They are about 1.5 hours by public transit from the Cambridge area, but not far if you have/know someone with a car.

S realizes he should have had contra as a higher priority on his college list. It is a great stress buster for him.

Thanks for the detailed reply :)

There is a music forum (look toward the bottom on the main page) where you might get more info.

I think there are contra dances/music in the five college area (western Mass)

^ Do you know any more about the western mass contras, since I’m applying to colleges in that area?

Also, I can’t find the aforementioned music thread- does anyone have the link to that?

Not college specific but culturally you will find fiddling, contra, step, bluegrass (and some great schools) throughout NC.

Not a thread, a specific sub forum [Music Major - College Confidential](Music Major - College Confidential Forums)

Ok thanks.
