For those of you in grad school, how did you decide to study the particular subject you're studying? Especially if you had several different interests, how did you decide to focus on one in particular? Was it based mostly on future career aspirations, what you found most interesting, what you assessed your greatest strengths to be, or something else?

For someone going into a PhD program, other than good grades, good test scores, being willing to put the hours into the work, etc. what else should that person possess? A passion for the field?

Just wondered what your thoughts were.
When is it worthwhile to pursue a particular field of study in graduate school, and when isn't it?
