Fieldston/Dalton/Horace Mann

I've went to both Dalton (current student) and Horace Mann.
My sister also just graduated from Fieldston, so if you have any questions you can PM me or ask them here.

This is the prep school admissions board. You may want to post in the college boards! Thank you though. I heard both Dalton and Hoarce Mann were great schools

Dalton, Horace Mann, and Fieldston are prep schools....

umm how hard is it to get inside dalton?

im confused are theses colleges or prep schools?

prep schools, in NYC. or at least horace mann is
in fact, they're very good prep schools, with the tuition to match lol
but, while it's not a ticket to the ivy leagues, it's still a big help
i'd recommend horace mann just because i know some people there XD

They are private high schools (day schools) located in the NYC area. So, they are college preparatory, but not boarding.

Ok, I have a little tiny question..........

Why did Dalton lose my Principle Rec.?...
And tell me my file was complete?
Why did they ruin the month of Feb. for me?

There is no need to answer the above question, I was just venting.

aussie wth get a life..lol jk..im sorry for your loss lol :P

how hard is it to get accepted if ur not a dalton student nor have a relative going to dalton?!

Very hard.

I suggest you apply to bs as well as many day schools in n.y.c.
A lot of my friends cried Feb. 16 (I was one of them) lol.
Do not limit yourself to that whole dalton, collegiate, spence brearly chicas.
Yes they are top schools, but branch out.
I have friends who are legacies in Dalton, Collegiate and Sacred Heart.
It's very hard to get in, Ive seen the Sacred Heart waitlist, OMFG.
Im trying to think of Xaviers sister school, but it wont come to me.
Apply to York Prep, Trinity, Dwight, Birch Wathen Lenox to name a few.
I did not get into Collegiate or Dalton because they are very dumb.
But I did get into a few other schools.
I wish you the best of luck and hope that you do get into Dalton.
Say hi to Josh for me.

Excuse me? You make it seem as if Trinity is a subpar school, when, in fact, it's far better than Fieldston or dalton or Horace Mann according to the WSJ.

Dalton is hard to get into. You need superb grades, superb ISEE scores, and it helps if your school is well connected. I didn't get in but that's not a shocker since it was my last choice.

I am applying all those schools. Can you tell me how many SSAT or ISEE percentile you guys got into those schools? Thanks!

I will warn you... I had a long chat with my principle that went to a boarding school over Horace. He said Horace was what he thought boarding school would be like. Everyone was rich, pompous and every parent was incredibly aggressive in letting their little angel have every advantage that they could.

The Dartmouth Review: Dartmouth's Worst Feeder School

A quote from the article:
"The School estimates that each student spends slightly over four hours each night on homework.

An eighth grader had his telephone conversations taped, was not allowed out of his house, and his parents made harassing phone calls to his friends. The problem? He had done poorly on a French exam. In eighth grade"

AND

"Last year, a school photographer managed to capture the quintessential The Horace Mann School image: one side of the street lined with six or seven hunter green grand Cherokees in a row, the other side with a like number of Black Lexii. Needless to say, individuality is not the most valued of social commodities."

Most of my post was based on that article and my principle's experience. I would heed this warning very thoroughly.

you're smart italianboarder
(by the way, it's principal, not principle.)

but that article is opinioned, biased literature, not straight journalism.
your principal went to boarding school, so I'm curious how he has developed his perspective on Horace Mann.

those examples in the article, with the exception of harrassment through phone call and recorded conversations are not all that extreme. my friends have taken SAT prep in 6th grade, it's not that big a deal. nor is learning a language since 5. you essentially learn oral skills in language much better before the age of 12, which is coincidentially when schools start teaching it to you.

EDIT: ok im a little biased on this too. my friend goes to horace mann, and she is the sweetest person you could ever meet, honest and completely down-to-earth. and she's slightly naive, so don't think she's just some stereotypically inconsiderate manipulative b*tch.

You are very biased. I am also very biased. Go figure right?

I see what you mean, I mean my cousins that live in New York have a higher income and they take 4 languages weekly, fluent in three. Not fluent in Latin, can't really achieve it as easily and practically. She does SSAT prep, I was happy when I did better then her and she has been having a tutor for 6 months. All in all, I think that the opportunity is amazing... But really a large portion of the people that my cousin befriends fall under the stereotype of "BMW, Gucci wearing, Hamptons chilling, rich kids". I mean some arn't, but I think that the article carries some merit.

NOW, it might just be who my cousin hangs around with... Always a possibility. My main point is that those people are more prevalent at that school than the average school.

i went to horace mann and it is an AMAZING school.
my parents couldnt afford it after 10th grade so i switched to the public high school in my area and only then did i realize how amazing horace mann really is.
its a wonderful school, and i didn't find it too hard to get in... my ISEE scores were stellar in english but not that great in math.
i would apply. its a great school and it puts you at an advantage.

America, beware. Your future leaders wear Gucci.

OMG!!!! I found that hilarious. it definitely made my day :)
