FIG- Is it a good thing to do?

I'm an imcoming freshman from out of state choosing housing options.
What is your opinion of FIG's and is it worth it to join?
Some of the benefits seem cool but I also don't want to always be with the same people.
Help! :)

You are only with your own FIG group in a couple of your classes. They will live in your dorm but there will be many, many other people in your dorm, and you will meet many, many other people at orientation, and in the fall at football games, at parties, in the cafeteria, and at any clubs you join. There will be about 8000 freshmen at UT this fall. I definitely don't think you need to worry about always being with the same people. I have never heard of anyone who wasn't glad that they were in a FIG - have only heard good comments :)

I've heard pretty good things about FIG's. You have to make sure you sign up for it when you do housing though, you have to request it separately. They only have room for about 200 students.

I got accepted for the Communications one already.

I'm in the college of communications! Are you in the college or just in the communications interest group?

I got accepted to both, pre-journalism I think.

Awesome. I'm in RTF.
Well I applied to FIG, hopefully it isn't too late. Thanks for your input.

I was part of an interdisciplinary FIG and REALLY enjoyed it. If you are interested in being a part of the RTF fig, then that's cool, I know you take 305 and a few other courses.

However, if the intro the film studies FIG is still offered, I would highly recommend it. It consisted of RTF 305 (Intro the Media Studies. RTF requirement), BDP 101 (Intro to Film Studies), GEO 30-? (Placing Environments in Cinema). The GEO class was the BEST course I have taken at UT thusfar. It was an absolutely great seminar, and I hope you have the opportunity to take it.

Be sure to ask your adviser about the interdisciplinary ones!

I am also interested in a FIG program, not a ResFIG though. To distinguish for those interesting in a non ResFIG program: the brochure states that you register for such a program during summer orientation after informing your academic advisor of your interest.
