I just wanted to know if you sign up for a FIG, are they the only classes you take Autumn Quarter, or can you add extra ones? I was considering signing up for Fig #72, which has CSE 142, ENG 131, and Psych 101. But I wanted to take MATH 126 in autumn as well, since I got a 5 on AP Calc. Is it possible to add an extra class along with a FIG, or would that be overwhelming myself with too many classes?

I'm wondering that as well. I would like to do that fig but with math instead of psychology, that would total like 16 credits right?

You can take up to 18 credits per quarter for basic tuition. Additional credits over the 18 credit limit would cost more money (except for Early Fall Start--EFS--credits, in which case you could realistically get 23 credits for Fall Quarter without paying extra). Check Discovery Seminars 2008 Program for more info if you're curious.

So the answer to your question is, yes, you can take extra classes. My freshman fall I took ANTH 150 during EFS (5 credits), my FIG (12 credits), and MATH 124 (5 credits) for a total of 22 credits.

seahawks--That is a bit of a heavy load to take those four classes, but it is feasible. You're not going to have much time to take breaks though or get very involved in activities, work, etc. English 131 will require lots of writing assignments and then a final portfolio with revisions on all your writing assignments. The others will require a good amount of time as well. You can drop a class within the first week of school without penalty, so you could see how your balancing act goes. That's what I did my first quarter and I thought it was fine in the first few weeks of the quarter. But by the end of the quarter, my attention had shifted towards two of my classes, and I had trouble giving much attention to math. Needless to say, I didn't too well in that class because it was difficult to balance and manage everything. Not to say that you can't do well though.

ProudHusky, is the fig worth it at all? I want to take Math 124, English Comp, and CSE 142 my first semester and I'm considering doing the FIG also. I've had mixed opinions, I've heard that its completely useless, and also that freshman should do it.

i think it was completely useless.
it's better to choose the classes individually, but many of the courses autumn quarter are reserved for fig's, so it's easy to get into them.

when i chose my fig though, i got stuck with a really awful professor who taught me nothing, so i would recommend going on ratemyprofessor.com and choosing classes based on the ratings. had i known how useless figs would be i would have done that.

also, taking 12 credits as opposed to 15 the first quarter, i have to make up the extra 3 credits before applying to the business school. i will still register as a freshman for fall 2008 because i wont have the required 45 credits because of the fig i took.

SO all in all fig=not worth it, especially if you want to get the most for your tuition.
