figured i'd get a second opinion

posted my stats a long time ago, but i figured i might as well get some more responses, b/c i'm kinda regretting i didn't apply to more safeties.

asian male, CA, senior, Beverly hills high school

sat IIs
math IIC- 800
writing- 690
chem- 730

GPA- here's where it's VERY iffy
3.4, mostly because of junior yr, when i somehow achieved a 2.8 (with 4 AP classes :( ) for 1st semester when my dad nearly went bankrupt and i had to deal with some issues at the same time- 4.2 this semester. stupid reason, yes, but had to write a few essays on that.

APs-
junior and senior yr english
US history
chemistry
computer science
calculus

took psychology at community college

colleges i'm waiting to get rejections from:
UCs: LA, Berkeley, San Diego, Irvine, Merced
upenn (hahahaha)
carnegie mellon
USC
northwestern
cornell (another lol)
Washington st. louis
Harvey Mudd
Michigan ann arbor
illinois

like i said, i probably should have applied to more safeties, b/c with the exception of irvine, all of these places have acc. rates of <50%, and the gpa range is crazy, esp. since i'm applying for engineering.

one last thing, if anyone would like to read one or two of my essays, that would be appreciated... drop a line at ysc87@hotmail.com :D

aww, i'm sorry to hear about your dad's situation. i'm sure colleges will be understanding though, since not many teens go through hardships like that, and it seems you have bounced right back.

hmm i don't know much about the engineering programs at the schools you applied to, but i'm almost sure u'll get into U of I. my friend got in too, and he had lower stats than u and very few ecs.

haha and you only need one safety, really. right? and besides, you probably won't need it.

i'll read your essay if you read mine. how bout it? pm me or something.

one last thing, are you korean? just curious. good luck!!!

yeah, i'm korean. was it really that easy to figure out? :D

bump bump ;)

yeah dude, your stats really are like mine, except you have very impressive extracurriculars! UM ann arbor has a crappy way of recalculating GPAs, so I have a really bad shot there myself, but i'm gonna try anyways. But I bet you have a good shot at berkeley, LA, and SD which are all really awesome, and i'm pretty sure you get into UIUC. good luck!

I think your gonna get the "base upon your continuation of a successful senior year" or somthing like that... rebound your senior year because they will most certainly follow up on you since ur junior year wasn't stellar

guys, thanks for keeping my dwindling confidence intact.

And yeah, i'm really working my ass off this year. :D

dude, for out of state michigan it's more of a reach. although he's obviously qualified for michigan (you should see some of the people they let in) they put a lot of emphasis on GPA, especially under their recalculation, which excludes senior year. It's good for a lot of people but probably hurts people like you and me, because it doesn't have any weighting for APs. but michigan isn't even that great if you're out of state. the teachers aren't all that good, and it's sooo expensive out of state. plus, their out of state financial aid is really not much to speak of. not to blaze on michigan or your chances, just to say you're qualified enough to get better deals at a lot of places, so you might consider that before you blow a lot of money or worrying on UM.
U Penn is a highly ranked Ivy League school. I think it is, to some degree, a reach for just about everyone, even people w perfect GPAs and really high test scores.

oh, man.. you just called penn a "slight" reach?

At beverly, we called the ED this year the "penn massacre"... people with 4.3 GPAs & 1500+ sats got flat-out rejected :P

yea...penn is a bitch. but good luck, man. youll get in!

p.s i love the 9 stair with the blue rail at beverly hills high. skateboarding paradise.

lmfao... yeah, the skaters are always there on weekends trying really hard to kill themselves on the front lawn.

..you live around there?

wats ur cumulative UNWEIGHTED ACADEMIC GPA??

3.1 or 3.2 i think

yea, i live in la, go to a community college, hoping to transfer to unc-chapel hill next fall. i dont skate anymore but back in high school it was good times skating there. hollywood high is great too. haha, ive seen people bail so hard! some guy dislocated his knee cap at hollywood high trying to clear that damn 12 stair.

that's why i snowboard instead... i hit snow instead of having concrete & railings ripping my manhood off. :p
