Hey,
I’m filling out the FAFSA online and it gives me two options:
"Which FAFSA do you wish to file?
The 2005-2006 School Year (July 1st, 2005 - June 30th, 2006)
The 2004-2005 School Year (July 1st, 2004 - June 30th, 2005) "
I’ll be a college freshman this fall. Which do I file? The bracketed dates and the ‘school year’ dates confuse me.

ah, it appears I can't file a paper one for the 2005-2006 school year until after July 1st 2005, so I'm guessing it has to be 2004-2005. Is that right (looking for confirmation since some of the questions are a little odd to be asking a hs senior)?

Thanks boysmom for your reply.
If I can only file for the 2005-2006 after July 2005, how did most people get their financial aid awards from their colleges?

oh for goodness sakes I was reading dates wrong (and gotten hold of the info packet for the wrong year). Thanks kc and boysmom -- to think I was weirded out for so long by own idiocy : ).

The date the FAFSA is due on different dates depending on what college you're applying to, and if you will be a freshman or an older student.
Make sure you check the dates for each individual college.

Kali - you're right, for most of my colleges the due date is long past. It's pretty obvious probably from my posts that I'm a newbie to this (No one else in my school - international school overseas - filed a FAFSA, so it's not something I was really aware of until about 2 weeks ago). But apparently, I can still file a FAFSA to some colleges, and in the process I can figure out where I stand on this EFC business. Because I'm also making some difficult choices about where to go, although I haven't filed a FAFSA in time,I might be able to see what sort of aid they might potentially provide in the future.

mea, if you're planning to file your FAFSA online, be sure to go through the steps to request your PIN number for the electronic signature right away. It usually takes several days to receive the PIN, and you cannot finalize your submission until you have it.

The alternative to the electronic signature is even slower: you have to print out the form, sign it and mail it in. Even air mail, that would take quite a while.
