file sharing at Duke

Does the network allow for file-sharing and p2p programs, such as Limewire? Can you use torrents?

Also, is it against school rules?

all i know is I MISS ELLIOTT'S

elliott :)

lol

My roommate uses limewire and torrents and stuff all the time...and she's never gotten caught. I don't think it's allowed anywhere, and I think you can get in pretty big trouble, but really, I wouldn't worry about it.

I (and many other students) use mytunes, which basically just lets you download other peoples itunes that you can connect to and all. I mean, obviously you can't get EVERY song, but it works. And if I need something else I just download it at home.

Now I miss Elliotts:(

RIP Elliott's :(

And mytunes rocks. I miss it being at home.

I don't think Duke is significantly different from anywhere else. Plenty of people file share, and some get caught.

what is/was Elliott's?

elliott smith? tis a shame.

Elliott is next year's Duke Student Government President. He had a private server that had tons of movies and tv shows and even some music. He started it two years ago, and it became a big deal this year since a lot of students used it. The administration eventually found out about it and had him shut it down.

oh that sounds cool... maybe his new position of power will enable him to bring it back (wishing...) :)

Actually, supposedly Elliott's big project over the summer is to try and get some sort of service that allows you to download movies and music legally for a nominal fee. Hopefully, it will work.

I guess that kid's experience alone (he was distributing gigs upon gigs of files and was caught by the administration yet was not kicked out but was instead allowed to be the Student Government President) should tell you that file sharing is that huge of a deal. I'm sure you can use torrents for stuff and not risk expulsion based on what people have said in this forum (I don't have any other info to go on.)

It was a little more complicated than that TheLastStop. Only a few people originally knew about his server, and it has always been password protected. He argued that it was technically private and anyone (the administration) who accessed the server without his permission did not do it legally. As for DSG elections...they're voted on by the students. He had a lot of support because he seems like someone who will actually do something as president instead of just tread water for a year. Name recognition probably also helped.
He is trying to get something going this summer. You'll hear a lot more about Elliott when you get to campus. He's a really nice, down to earth guy.

It seems so crazy that one kid, some dude named Elliott, can get his name known by nearly 5000 kids. And all simply by creating a server for kids to share their music on. Rock and Roll: STILL bringing the youth together.
