File sharing at UofC

I know that the MPAA and their equivalents in other industries are trying to crack down on P2P activities at colleges. They are pressuring schools and the federal government to take action about students downloading movies, music, and stuff. Is there any action being taken by the school to stop illegal downloads and if so, how effective is that action?

I've heard, anecdotally, that NSIT is vigilant in tracking down and punishing people who use P2P services. This may or may not be connected to the MPAA or RIAA: I certainly don't know that anyone at Chicago has been served papers.

I had a friend who got a letter from Susan Art. Apparently there are ways to illegally download things and not have it traced to you, but I am not one three three seven about such things, so I'll just tell you don't get your hands dirty, and use Netflix.

Wow, you know how I know I am ready for Chicago? I actually got the 1337 reference. Either that, or I am a huge freakin' nerd.

Warez....
why bother P2P?!

Actually, you get busted for uploading, not downloading. So, you know, don't upload. Easy enough.

(I know BT makes you upload, so be sure that you're not uploading popular or new files and you're all good.)

Which clients let you mess with the up:down speed ratio?

which clients would you guys reccomend

peer guardian 2

chronicidal: Every client I've used does. My personal favorite is μTorrent because it's so tiny, but Azureus (bloated as it might be) gets the job done. Linux users might also want to look into Deluge, which isn't great, but worked okay for me and was the prettiest thing available in GTK+.

wow. a girl that uses linux.thats deserves ecookies

or- get a jump drive and grab everyone's music in your house. Let others do it illegally- then take the profit.

FYI
Utorrent has been cooporating with the MPAA and RIAA for quite some time now... I wouldn't recommend that one at all!

DannonWater has great advice. It's also a good way to find new music. I hard-drive swap with people on the hall all the time.

rszanto: "Which clients let you mess with the up:down speed ratio?" is what I was replying to. I don't condone blatantly illegal activities ;)
