To most college internet systems allow students to use sites like the pirate bay? Or could students get in trouble for downloading shared files?

No. If the files being shared are illegal, do you think the college wants you to be Ble to do it freely.

None of my colleges cared either way. If you got caught it was your own fault.

Is it easier to get caught if you’re using the college’s network?

I would be very careful at minimum.
Many big schools have networks which are under constant supervision, in order to make sure they stay online. If they have decided to start a war on fire sharing, you never know what could happen.
Is a few albums or movies really worth getting kicked out of college?
I remember a few years back, the RIAA and MPAA were teaming up to get colleges to install bittorrent blockers on their networks.

My college has a file sharing tracker on their network, so if you have a torrent or P2P client, then it won’t give you access to the network. Lucky for me, I live in an apartment and have my own internet. Not that I would pirate music. Never…:P

My college doesn’t give a ****. Which is as it should be. You get caught it’s your own fault and should have nothing to do with where you go to school or what network you use. If we were at home, Verizon or whatever wouldn’t block your access because it didn’t like what you downloaded.
They did block limewire at one point I think.

Be careful if you do it, it all depends on your school. Mine will slap a $50 fine on you the first time you get caught, then $100, then you lose your internet privilege for the rest of your time at the school. I’ve downloaded via torrent twice this year, three times last year and I’ve never been caught.

Also, a lot of schools only crack down on torrents and p2p programs. If you’re only really looking for music, there are file sharing websites that will let you download for free.

Well my roommate has downloaded 100’s of gigs of music/movies (just him not me ;)) on our network so our University certainly doesn’t seem to care. Not to mention our connection is orgasmic. You can download a 4 gig blueray rip in about 8 mins.

Do it all the time. Use file sharing websites such as hotfile, rapidshare etc instead of torrents.
