Is it okay to use file-sharing programs like Limewire or Kazaa? Has anyone been prosecuted by the recording industry at Cal?

You can do it at your own risk. It counts against bandwidth in the dorms. You can use DC++, that doesnt count against bandwidth and its really fast. You can download movies in like 2-3 minutes.

Yes, people have been caught.

You get two chances. The first time you are caught you are warned. The second time you will be reported.

So we can only use iTunes and similar crap? Adam and unlimted, are there sites where you got your information?

DC++ is within the berkeley network. It is harder for ppl to get caught because you need to be a student/staff to access it. All file sharing has its risks, but by using DC++ you are lowering your risks.

PeerGuardian.

IRC works at Berkeley, right?

Im trying to decide if I want to spend $100 to get Matlab for Eng77, or take a risk and get it off DC++

Why wouldn't IRC work?

if you're not one of the top downloaders- you're not gonna get caught...plain and simple. and quite frankly, i don't believe that anyone HAS been caught yet, at least at Berkeley...those are all stories that people tell freshmen so they get scared and stay in line.

but if you're still scared, TRUSSSTTTT me, you will not be one of the top downloaders, for any service you use...there are insane people who download a disgusting amount of songs/movies, and chances are that you're already too far behind to ever catch up

I suggest using DC++, since it doesn't count against your bandwidth...plus, I used DC++ like a maniac for an entire year and never got whiff of a virus...kazaa and limewire more frequently carry viruses, so you gotta watch out. But yea, download away...I suggest downloading every single episode of family guy, for starters...that should keep u busy for the first few weeks of school :D

Well would the files available on DC++ compare with those available in the normal file-sharing programs?

o, and for all you freshies who wanna be ahead of the learning curve and not sound like the sheltered momma's boy/girls that you really are (im not pointing fingers, I was there too), make sure you've seen SLC Punk and Donnie Darko before you step into the dorms...especially SLC Punk, kids are crazy about that movie in the dorms the first few weeks of school- so if you haven't seen it, head to your local blockbuster and WATCH IT!

yea, anything you've ever desired is on DC++....including the infamous Putnam Porn....hahaha, there, I've said it....now talk amongst yourselves, freshies, and see if you can figure out the "history of the Putnam Porn"

That is probably one thing i didnt like about DC++, i couldnt find everything i wanted. It has a decent selection, but not as good as limewire and stuff. It can get irritating at times when you want a certain movie or song and you cant find it. Oh yeah, there is also a minimum of 1GB sharing, so you need to put up 1 gig to use it. At first some ppl put their C-drive on it and download a few movies, and then change it to only share those movies.

Hey I did get caught once last year!! I am not lying.

What happened to you? How did they find you?

Wait Limewire can get you in trouble at Cal! WHAAAT?!?!?
Is there any other school that has this policy?

Limewire can get you in trouble anywhere.

Top downloaders...I'm at serious risk for that (I've downloaded 2GB+ of porn in single nightly sittings). Anyway, as long as I use IRC, I'm safe (thank God for the Internet Privacy Act of 1995 - I LOVE YOU BILL CLINTON)! Then again I will be a valuable contribution to the Berkeley DC++ network (5000 mp3s, 30+ gigs of porn, etc.).

^haha how will you even find privacy to watch porn at berkeley?
