Filing as independent

One more question, I was hoping to file independent for financial aid but I’m not a ward of the court. My parents pretty much abandoned me and I’ve been living with my elderly grandmother. They will not contribute to college costs, and she won’t be able to. I don’t think I’m eligible for scholarships either. What are my options for paying for school ? Can I file as independent ?

if you’re under 18, then you need to have your Grand named as your legal guardian. That’s really the only way you’re going to be able to be considered independent. Otherwise, your parents’ income/assets will be needed for financial aid.

If you can get your Grand to be named as your legal guardian, then you’ll be independent when you turn 18.
