SO I have heard that you can only submit to 6 schools at a time using the FAFSA. I am applying to 9 schools, all of which i wish to submit the FAFSA to. How do I go about doing so? I know it isn't available for 2011, but could someone help me out? Thanks

I believe you can include up to ten schools on the FAFSA now. It changed a couple of years ago…used to be six…now it’s ten.

And on this topic, what happens when you submit the FAFSA to the current school child is attending yet a transfer is being explored? Does the current school see that the FAFSA is being submitted elsewhere in addition to their school and if so, does that possibly have a negative impact on the financial aid (institutional) being offered?

Thanks for any insights.

I can’t imagine that the current school would screen for other school codes on the FAFSA. I work in a financial aid office, and we don’t worry about other schools on the FAFSA.

However, if you are going back in AFTER an initial filing to add a school code, I would advise deleting the first school & adding the new school. The reason for this? You can be selected for verification anytime you make a change … including simply adding a school code … and removing the first school makes life easier if the change results in selection for verification.

Thanks Kelsmom…

Could you clarify…if the FAFSA is submitted to four (4) schools at the same time (including the one student is currently attending) and then two other schools are possibly being pursued after the application has been submitted, are you saying to remove the initial four schools from the application and to add the two new schools? If so, how will the initial four schools still be included in the process to determine what financial aid would be provided? It’s unclear to me how this process actually unfolds…

Does each school separately provide a financial aid award based upon the FAFSA? This is our first “second time” in the process so am somewhat confused about how the numbers are calculated if multiple schools are listed. Any additional information would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, remove the first four schools, and put in the two new schools. The first schools do not get the new transaction sent to them. The only problem in doing this is if you estimated income info & have to update later … in that case, you would not remove the first schools because then they will not get those later updates. If you do estimate at first then have to update, you can just add the last two schools’ codes on at that time.

The way it works is that your initial FAFSA is sent to the schools you list on it. If you make subsequent changes, the changes are sent to every school that is on that transaction … so if you add a school code, the updated transaction goes to every school listed on that transaction. Let’s say that is transaction #2. If you don’t take off the first four schools, #2 goes to all six schools. If you later have to make changes, all six schools listed on transaction #2 will receive the updated transaction #3. If you remove the first four schools, #2 only goes to the two new schools. If you update #2 later, only the two new schools will receive updated transaction #3.

And yes, each school provides its own financial aid package based on the info received from the FAFSA.
