Filing Income Tax Return.

Are students required to file an income tax return if IRS sent them a W2 form thing? What happens if they don't file it? Also, if they don't file it, do they simply put "did not file" on the fafsa form and put zeros for student income and such?

Whether you're required to file depends on type and amount of income. Check the IRS site to see whether you have to file. Even if you aren't required, it might be to your advantage if you had income withheld.

On FAFSA, indicate whether you will, or will not, file.

For income, put the correct amounts, regardless of whether or not you filed a tax return.

If you had federal taxes withheld, and you didn't earn enough to pay taxes, file a tax return. You'd get the taxes withheld from your paycheck refunded to you. Doesn't everyone need extra cash?

I've always figured if you get a W-2, you should be filing a tax return. It's really easy to do the 1040 EZ. It's even better when you get the refund!

what if I'm not working? So there is no income and I will put a check mark next to "Will not file" right? That kind of sound like I'm choosing not to file it.

If you had no income at all, you don't need to file, and you can check "will not file."

No --- if there's no income, there's nothing to file.

I had federal taxes exempt. So they did not hold any of my money. My income was only $808 as a HS student in 2006 after they took out some money for medicaid and social security and state tax. I think my EFC will rise if I include my tax information.

You have to include your income on FAFSA, whether or not you file taxes. $800 of income won't change your EFC a penny. Students have an Income Protection Allowance that shelters income up to almost $3K per year.

You do not have to file a federal tax return but you do have to include the income on your FAFSA.

Lil-k FAFSA is a federal form. If you do not report the income little red flags will pop up. IRS is federal. They communicate. However Your first $3,000 of income is protected and will not increase your EFC.

Ok. I won't file the tax return, but I'll be sure to include the income on the FAFSA. Do I simply enter "0" for the questions that ask about information regarding the tax return? [They tell you to refer to a specific line to enter the value
