are Filipinos considered as URMs?

(Someone told me we are, and someone told me we aren't... and then SOMEONE told me were not even asian!)(any response is very much appreciated)

(please and thank yoU!)

(i'm not filipino-american okay. im just Filipino.)

Fellow Filipino here. :)

From what I've heard, it differs from place to place. Most LACs, yep, we're URMs (I'm guessing the high price tags deter a lot of our more thrifty instincts-- I know my parents nearly had a heart attack when I told them how much my favorite LAC costs without financial aid). At bigger universities (most notably the ones in Cali, since there's a huge Filipino residency there), probably not.

Hm. As for the asian v. pacific islander argument, it gets very tiring after a while. I've marked "asian" all my life, and when asked if I'm asian or not, I say I am. I guess it's a matter of preference (or even PC-ness).

Felllow fillipino here too. I have no idea though.

also filipino. i would argue that we're pacific islanders, as the philippines is a collection of islands in the pacific ocean. :/

we're definitely not an URM, however, because we're not black, hispanic, or native american.

filipino here too.
about the asian vs. pacific islander thing, it really could go both ways--
the philippines is in southeast asia and it's a bunch of islands in the pacific ocean.
a friend asked me if japan would be "pacific islander" because it's a collection of islands in the pacific, too. lol

definitely not a URM

taiwan would be too. i should mark that on my apps haha.

forgive me for my ignorance but what exactly do y'all mean when you'll say URM..

under-represented minority

Speaking for Amherst, Williams, & Swat... yes, you are URM... as for Ivies and the like...no clue.

thanks kctwister....

Like everyone else said: it probably depends.

I'm half filipino.

Filipinos are officially Asian. They are mostly of Malay descent, with Chinese, Japanese (and on some islands negrito) spliced in.

It is very important to note that Filipinos are not underperforming Asians. To the contrary, Filipinos are one of the highest asian performers in the US.

I just had to get that out of the way before some idiot implies Filipinos are underperformers:

Ranked by **bachelor's degree percentage/b:]http://www.census.gov/prod/2004pubs/censr-17.pdf):

Chinese: 48.1%

Filipino: 43.8%

Korean: 43.8%

Japanese: 41.9%

Thai: 38.6%

Vietnamese: 19.4%

Cambodian: 9.2%

Laotian: 7.7%

Hmong: 7.5%

I listed oriental Asians only.

Median Earnings:

Median Family Income (page 16):
Philippines: $65,189 (2nd highest among oriental asians)

Median earnings by sex (page 15):
Philippines:
Male: $35,560 (4th)
Female: $31,450 (3rd)

Poverty rate (page 17):
Philippines: 6.3% (1st! surprised the hell out of me)

My main question is: do LACs group us in with other asians? Or do they consider specific asian races individually?

Most Filipinos stick to the coasts. I'm here at Washington University in ST. Louis and there are probably 12-20 Filipinos total in undergrad.

Taiwanese isn't a URM... counts as chinese, I really don't think any sort of asian gets a bump up in admissions one way or another. I deifnately wouldn't count of being a URM in any sense on getting you into college on way or another.

johnnydr87: Interesting stats. I am surprised that the Filipinos equal Koreans in terms of the bachelor degree recepients. I had always thought the Chinese and the Koreans were way up there, leaving everybody else behind inthe dust.
