Fill in the Blanks

MY D is a Jr. She has a list of schools she plans on applying to, but IMO she is missing schools between her matches/safeties and her reaches. She wants to major in Journalism or Communications, the school HAS TO have one of those 2. She only wants to be in the mid atlantic states, NY/NJ/PA/DC/MD..possibly VA and possibly CT. No really small LAC's, wants at least 5000 students. Name means nothing to her, all she wants is a school that has her major and that she feels is a fit. A diverse student body would be a plus. Her are are stats and the way we see her list. Please suggest some schools that may fall between Syracuse and NYU. Thanks for your help.

Stats:
Attends one of the NYC specialized HS. Nationally known and very competitive. Commutes an hour and a half each way by bus, ferry and train to get there.
GPA 3.8 UW..school doesn't weigh, but mostly honors and APs
School doesn't rank either, but would probably be in top 10%.
Old SAT 1410 780M 630V
New SAT 1950 720M 620V 610W (may take again or may not, may take ACT)
SAT II Math I 700 will be taking Math II, French and English

ECs in school:
4 year varsity Softball letter-captain Jr & Sr year
Journalist for school satire newspaper
School leadership committee
NHS

EC's outside of school:
Volunteer math tutor 4 years
Volunteer tour guide at a Tibetan Art Museum
Volunteer shoveling snow for seniors
Travel fastpitch softball-takes most of her time

Reccomendations will be very good and essay should be as well.

Here is how we see her list:
Columbia-reach
NYU-Reach..maybe match
Syracuse-match
American U-match
Penn State-match (father lives in PA, she is considered a resident)
SUNY Geneseo-match
Ithaca-safety
Marist-safety
SUNY Buffalo-safety
SUNY Plattburgh-safety

If she can get that SAT score up to about a 2100 with some hard work in the next few months, she'll be a match for NYU. All of the other schools seem reasonable matches, if not safeties.

Maybe you should consider Boston University.

If you can pursuade her to venture west one more state, I would look at Ohio U in Athens. The Scripps School of Journalism is excellent, Athens is a beautiful college town. It would be a safety with great hope for merit aid. My neighbor has a daughter at OU and she loves it. She's in London for a Study Abroad experience and is having a great time.

i know this is extremely off from the mid-atlantic states, but northwestern has the best journalism school (IMO).
