I’ve recently been accepted to Boston University. I have an EFC of 0 and was granted only $30k aid. A guy I know has the same gpa and also an EFC of 0 and he was granted $60k aid.
The only difference I’ve noticed between our CSS profile is in the question: How much does the student expect to receive from the following sources to pay for educational expenses for the 2020-21 academic year?
I put down $12,000. He put down $3000. Could this be the reason behind our large gap in financial aid?
Also, what are the chances of me receiving an extra ~$20k in aid if I were to appeal?
That question about how much you plan to pay has really nothing to do with the financial aid calculation.
But something isn’t right. BU is meeting full need now as they calculate it to be.
Are your parents divorced?
Are either of you parents self employed or do they own a business?
Oh…and GPA has nothing to do with need based aid.
What is on your profile that isn’t on your FAFSA? Primary home equity? Are you sure your profile was accurately completed.
Call the financial aid office and ask them to explain your need based award.
Does BU meet need for transfers?
http://www.bu.edu/finaid/apply/transfer/
“. Need-based Boston University scholarships are offered on a competitive basis. Various factors are considered including calculated financial need, academic achievement, the availability of funds for your program of study, and other factors.”
Also…
So no…all transfer students do not have full need met.
On another post, you say you are a freshman at Binghamton. If you are instate for Bing, your tuition is fully covered with a $0 EFC by either TAP or Excelsior. I would suggest you stay at Bing. It’s a great school…and an affordable one for you, right?
Thanks for the help so far!! I like Bing, but I’ve always wanted to attend BU because of its atmosphere and urban area. My older friends who had transferred to BU received great aid, so I was hoping it would be the same for me as well.
@Kliang you can ask them…nothing ventured nothing gained.
