filling out housing stuff

D accepted to Honors. Yeaaa! My understanding is we should let UMD know we want housing on campus. D filled out the questionnaire. There was no place to make a deposit or select a dorm, she said.

What else do I need to do to make sure she secures on-campus housing? Can anyone walk me thru this process? Thanks.

Congratulations jkeil and daughter! There is no deposit needed at this time. She should fill out the form and submit it now. Her dorm will be determined by the honors program she chooses.
I’m happy for your daughter. I hope she loves UMD!

thank you, terpmom.

That’s all there is to it? So please tell me if these are the next steps AND the timing of them:

They have some sort of honors day welcome.

They make available a form to fill out to rank your preferred honors programs.

They let you know which program they give you.

They then ask for your ranked dorm choices.

They notify you of your dorm.

You send them the deposit.

@jkeil911, your daughter has to fill out her honors program preference by February 14! They’ll contact you by March 1!

holy bajolies! that’s a shot out of the dark! how did I miss that? and we have to decide without talking to anyone at the school about the different programs?! is that right, jibler?

I randomly found that link… It’s odd how they didn’t mention that site at all…

I didn’t hear/read about that… would appreciate it if you could tell me where you did.

That’s the way I recall it from last year. I think there is info on the honors website about the individual programs. She won’t rank her dorm, it will be assigned based on her honors program.

This is a good comparison of all the honors programs (which also shows each program’s housing dorms):

I’m a little confused about the housing form. I thought I saw something here saying to fill it out even if you weren’t sure you’d be going to UMD, however on the UMD site I saw the following under the FAQ:

What legal obligations do students accept by asking for residence hall housing?
The University’s housing and meals agreement is legally binding upon its receipt by the Department of Resident Life. No student should submit the housing and meals agreement without being prepared to accept and pay for housing and meal services or without having read its terms and conditions.

This looks like I should wait until AFTER my daughter makes her decision before submitting the housing form, right?

They are binding upon its receipt - meaning after you submit your deposits, which you are not doing by simply submitting the form.

It is highly recommended to fill it out as soon as possible, even though your child might not attend.

apparently, it’s not an obligation they enforce (in the case of Honors and maybe Scholars?). An earlier post said that you can get a housing refund if you let UMD know you’re not coming by June 1st or some such date. I cannot find that post, but certainly you could call Resident Life for more info. Do try to let us know what you find out. Where’s maryversity when you need her?

It’s July 1. Go ahead and fill out the form now. If you decide UMD isn’t the right school for you…you have to withdraw the housing form no later than July 1.

I know I’m no mv, but I’m trying my very best to help! :)

Thanks for the info! Much appreciated :)

I’m sorry, terpmom7, I’m grateful to everyone here, really, but my head is spinning! Forgive my blunder, please.

Wow, ok, to back up terpmom7, here is the exact verbage
“Cancellation, Release and Refund
Release from this Agreement will be approved when a new resident’s signed notice of cancellation is received by Resident Life on or before July 1, 2014”
and here is the page to read more detail

Long and short is you are fine to and should commit to housing as long as you cancel by July 1st should you decide not to attend. The dining plan is required for those who are housed in traditional dorm rooms without a kitchen (which is basically the majority of freshman). Note that it is in your favor for the agreement to be “binding” even before you commit to attending the school itself - that means you will get housing if you attend!
Here is the original thread from astrophysicsmom - it has info about housing plus answers a lot of your questions about the honors/scholars programs

And here is another important thing to sign up for right away because they fill up FAST - it is worth doing an overnight stay to really get a feel of the campus/student life

I noticed that the living and learning program that was called “Digital Cultures and Creativity” last year is now called “Design Cultures and Creativity” Does anyone know if this program is changing its focus from last year?

I am just speculating here, but I think it is probably just a more accurate name. Seeing “digital” cultures might have been misleading for some students, so this is probably just a way to clarify the focus more on the arts/design aspect…?
