I am a newly admitted undergrad with a film studies major for fall 2007. Anyone have info on:
1) The level and intensity of actual film production in the film studies major
2) The activeness of the GIANT student film organization at ucb
3) Any film institutes or film academy type places near berkeley.
I know its a rarely discussed topic, but any info is appreciated. Thanks

there's not a whole lot of production, as it's not a real film school. but i don't know many film studies majors, i'm sure people do prodcue, UC berkeley won some award for the best student film festival.

dunno much

there's a huge film institute on campus, the pacific film archive, its got a butt-load of films from all over the world and exhibitions of films from all over the pacific.

thanks,
what about the drama dept? - as in the quality of actors?

i know one or two people in theatre, they're just like every theatre person i know, fun loving love acting/singing/dancing. I don't know about the quality of their acting, but they seem happy, which may indicate something.

so i guess its legitimate to assume that the arts (film, theater, dance) are somewhat of a minor thing at berkeley?

no, arts are pretty big. until two days ago there was a great exhibit @ the doe library on Botero, a colombian artist who painted portrayals of the U.S. tortures @ abu grahaib (sp?) that was really cool, no art gallery in the US would show it except for Berkeley. Its what you want it to be. There's tons of performances, art exhibits, and so on. Alot of the people on this board make you think Cal is a very sciencey/nerdy place, but theres a lot of expressiveness and culture around.

well, i am a film studies major, but my true passion is film production. so while berkeley is not production heavy, it has its obvious pros.
i am just wondering on the availability/willingness of say, acting/dance students and faculty for when i plan to shoot a film

I don't have numbers or anything, but just from my personal experience, I know quite a substantial number of friends who are film/theater/dance majors or who are in acting groups on campus (there's so many). I have two friends who are film studies majors and they really like it.

I would be quite happy if you came to Berkeley. I am an actress ALWAYS looking for on-camera experience and student films are so rare here at Berkeley.

sweetdreams - can you perhaps tell me how to contact your friends who are film majors? i would love to ask them some questions.

tara - how many actors/actresses are there at berkeley? and what about the racial diversity of them? and also, in college, do actors want payment for out of class projects or is it on a mutual-benefit basis? oh, and why did you choose to go to berkeley if it isn't an performing arts centered place?

StickFigureMan - let me check with my friend to see if he's willing to give a screenname or email address. I'll PM you later tonight.

I know a good number of actors/actresses, but I don't know if many of them are serious about it enough to look for outside opportunities. Racial mix is pretty good, and as far as I've seen, no pay is given, just mutual benefit.

I got a full ride scholarship to Berkeley--that's why I'm here :)

hm i see. is it just me that it strikes odd that there are actors and actresses that aren't that serious?
but i suppose that if i went there with and tried pulling some people (acting and perhaps dance), i could pull something together.
realistically, would i and also the actors and such have enough time on our hands that would allow for a production?

full ride to berkeley - nice.
presently im split between berkeley and UT(where i got a 18000 scholarship). any regrets on choosing berkeley from another institution with a stronger arts dept?
