I am a recent applicant of Brown. For a while now Brown has been one of my top choices. Though film is not the primary thing I hope to study at university it is certainly something of great interest to me (particularly film theory/history more than actual production, though I do like both). I would love to be able to take a number of classes in the subject, if not double major or minor in it as well. However, I am a bit confused on what film at Brown is like. Initially it appeared to me that the school did not have a film major, however, when I came across the website for the Department of Modern Culture & Media at Brown I became a little confused. There certainly seems to be a multitude of classes available, I’m just not sure how it all works.

Can anyone tell me what they know about film at Brown? For example if there is a good program, if there are major/minor options, etc. Do any current/former students have any experience they want to share?

I’m not a student but I’m interested in film/the MCM program as well. From what I’ve heard, Brown is one of the best schools to learn about media and many people from the school end up working in it. And the program does a great job of teaching both theory and technical stuff. There’s several different “tracks” you can take to get your degree but I believe the main one is choosing 11 courses to take.

MCM is the “film studies” department. It was created from a merger of the semiotics department and film classes in the English department. It does have an excellent reputation. The one caveat I’d have to say about the department is that it is heavily theoretical – if you look up what semiotics is, you’ll understand the foundation of the department. Some people love it while others might find the theory too esoteric.

Lots of other departments offer classes that incorporate film study into their material. American Civilization is one. And there are writing classes in Literary Arts to study playwriting, screen play writing, etc.

There are a lot of Brown grads in Hollywood/film/tv/entertainment. Many majored in departments other than MCM.

You should apply to USC also. Best film school in the country and if you have the stats for Brown it’s not to hard to get a full/half-ride scholarship!
