Film: Brown, Vassar, or Wesleyan

Decision time. I’ve done some research on studying film at these three schools. Was hoping to get other people’s opinions. Thanks!

P.S. Love all three places and would be happy (socially, etc.) at any of them.

These are my three top schools as well. I was admitted to all three, and I decided to go to Brown.

My decision came after realizing one thing: I'm going to go insane living in Poughkeepsie or Middletown after a few years. Once students reach their junior or senior years, many start getting much more involved with the greater community than just on campus.

Vassar and Wesleyan not only have much smaller student bodies, but are in a tiny greater community.

Drop me an IM at JustPeteHere if you want to chat about it... maybe we can change each other's minds -- in the meantime, I'm going to be heading to ADOCH on the 19th, and will probably be arriving at Brown late August.

Funny. Yeah, Poughkeepsie and Middletown don't strike me as exciting cities, but I was pretty impressed by the film facilities at Vassar and Wesleyan. I LOVED the Brown campus and Providence, but film as a field of study seemed less structured there. What are you planning to study?

Psychology. I've already taken 5 college level courses in the subject and I love it!

Oh - and being less structured is a nice theme at Brown. Study what aspects of film are more interesting to you -- and anything else :)

These bits of info don't address the first poster's question directly, but they do demonstrate that there is an active film community at Brown and in the Providence community.

The Ivy League Film Festival was started at Brown in 2001, and has continued to grow since then. Generally the weekend-long festival is a great way to network with professionals in the film industry and other students who are similarly involved in making films.

There are also two upcoming film festivals being sponsored by Brown in the next few weeks. Check the links pasted below for more info.

Finally, there's a pretty cool Screening Society in Providence that was founded with generosity by Brown's Dept. of Modern Culture and Media. Again, check the pasted link for more info.

I am deciding between those three schools as well, but not for film.

I must say, however, that Wesleyan has, in my opinion, a superior film studies program. It has a lot of very impressive alums and just built a great new building. Wesleyan is really the place for film. About the location, I'd say the Poughkeepsie is the worst by far, followed by Middletown, and then with Providence on top. However, Middletown really isn't that bad... it's not dangerous, and there are a lot of good cheap ethnic restaurants. Most significantly, though, is Wesleyan's central location. It's about a half hour from New Haven and about an hour and a half from NYC (I might be wrong about the exact length, but it's somewhere in the ballpark) and it's too far from Boston. Providence is VERY close to Boston, but for film, I think there would be a greater advantage in being close to NYC. Vassar is the closest to NYC, but Middletown is a lot better than Poughkeepsie.

Hey everyone, thanks for the comments and info. bjrwrh, the more research I do, the more I think you're right about this one. thanks! have you decided where you're going?

incidentally, brown also just got a new film lab and has an incredible roster of alumni in film making.
this is the select few of them that concentrated in MCM
http://www.brown.edu/Departments/MCM/alumni/
(most concentrate in art semiotics which doesn't publish an alumni list on the department page)

thanks for the link
