Film/Cinema, help please

Hi, I am interested in a film/cinema major, here's some info about me.

-I take mainly honors classes
-I took 3 AP classes this year (Statistics, Physics, and Word Hist.) and am taking two next year (Lit & Comp. and Euro Hist.)
-I have generally a B average, though I also get A's and the occasional C
-I am Secretary of the Teenage Republican Club
-I am Class Vice President
-I have been Homeroom representative in my class
-I have been a grade representative in Student Government Association
-I am a producer for my local channel, channel 19
-This summer I am filming a Star Wars fanfilm Trilogy, with fullblown effects (cgi, lightsaber rotoscopig etc.) to show off some of my filmmaking ability
-I also am shooting a dramatic film right now, plus another short and a documentary in the fall
-I have no applyable score for the SAT, but my projected average schore is between 1400-1500 (that is, of course, with the old SAT)
-I be taking all 5 AP tests
- I will be taking the ACT as well

Where can/should I apply?

Univ. of Southern Calif., NYork Univ., Emerson College are in the top choices.

Florida State Univ. and supposedly Univ. of Texas @ Austin are also better than many others.

You could also check out LACs that have film, but I am not sure of their abilities/reps.

Best.

Look into the Dodge School of Film at Chapman University, in So. Cal. They have a fine film department and are completing a huge working studio.

It would also be good if you could enter your films in some festivals. Winning awards would be a good way to showcase your filmmaking skills on your application, as some film schools do not allow you to submit any demos with your application.

Once you decide on some film schools to look at, have your guidance counselor look at your stats (class rank, GPA, etc.) and tell you whether you are competitive for admission to those schools).

a question: is UCLA film school considered good?

//a question: is UCLA film school considered good?//

Excellent.

According to U.S. News & World Report, the top 10 film schools are:

New York University
University of Southern California
University of California at Los Angeles
American Film Institute
California Institute of the Arts
Columbia University
School of the Art Institute of Chicago
University of Texas - Austin
Florida State University
Northwestern University
Temple University
Rochester Institute of Technology
San Francisco Art Institute
University of California - San Diego

Don't bother with UCLA. You have to be at the school for like two years before you can even apply for the film major and if film is what you really wanna do that is a lot of time wasted and a big chance of not getting it.

ATLien, I wasn't clear on this from their website. The first time I read through it, I thought that was what it was saying, and the 2nd time I decided I had been wrong. Are you sure that you can't be accepted into a film major until your junior year? Do you know anything else about how that process works?

I think you're allowed to go in as some kind of pre-Film major, but you'd still have to audition in your junior year. If I'm wrong, sorry.

You might want to go into the UCLA forum to ask. I think they would know more about it.

there is no pre-film thing. it's basically almost 500 ppl within ucla applying for 15 spots. the film dept staff member i spoke with said if you're serious about film you don't risk it, and should just wait for grad school. that was when i changed my top choice school to usc cntv

Look into North Carolina School of the Arts, it's one of the only schools of its kind. They have full sound stages, a foley studio, they PAY for your film (so you don't have to raise money, which you do at most other schools) and you start shooting as soon as you get there-which you DON'T get to do at almost any other school. That should be the first thing you ask...if you want to be in a hands on program NCSA is the only place I know that allows you to start working with film as a freshman.

if you guys had a choice between getting into UCLA's film program or USC's/NYU's/Yale's, which would you choose? I guess what i'm trying to ask is that-because ucla is so selective, is it one the best film schools? how well known is the film school even? i haven't heard it mentioned very much on these forums until now.

NYU is definitely the best and yale would be the worst. Out of those three choices. However Im a die hard NYU so assume I'm being Biased lol

I can second what "just"amom said--Chapman's film school is very strong. Chapman would be an excellent choice for a film major.

Who can tell me more about North Carolina School of the Arts? Its reputation?

Yea, I've never heard of North Carolina School of the Arts. How competitive is it?

NYU film is outstanding. But most would agree that USC film is better.

i agree...and FSU, UT austin are very very good.I've never been to USC or NYU but i had the chance to visit UT austin and FSU film facilities and i was blowed away...
