Film Major & Backup

I'm applying to a bunch of schools for Film Production & Cinematography, but I've been rethinking my future and although Film is my passion and I'd love to work in the field when I'm older, what would be some smart decisions for a backup? I'm looking at schools like Emerson, Purchase, RIT, BU, etc. and I'd like to know if I should minor in something, major in something, any suggestions overall? thanks!

I'm just mainly looking for like, an alternative, basically like what would pretty much look good for a general job or something in the communications field if Film didn't work out for me?

So, jakem, are you looking for a completely unrelated major? Are you planning to apply to these schools with film as a first choice and something else as a second choice major?

If so, I think that's a good idea. Good film programs are very competitive and it's wise to have a plan B.

I would go about your search for a second major the same way one would go about looking for a first major. Pretend film is not an option. With that off the table, what interests you? What are you good at? What are some interesting majors offered at the schools to which you are applying?

The truth is that most undergrads will change their major at some point. Nevertheless, you can hopefully get going in the right direction. Then, if you decide to veer off into a different major, hopefully it will be somewhat similar to the one you started with.

What do you want to do in film? You mentioned cinematography but then also communications, which seem to relate to two rather different aspects of film. As an English or Creative writing major, you'd learn written communication and storytelling, as a Theater major you'd learn a bit of everything, as a Photography major, you'd be a good fit later on as a cinematographer. You could study Graphic Design or Animation, Illustration, and so forth and later do editing, effects, etc.
